Morning Wood: What It Says About Your Health

Most guys treat morning wood as a nuisance or a joke. It's actually one of the simplest health checks you get for free.

Why it happens
Healthy men get around 3 to 5 erections every night during sleep, mostly during REM (dreaming) sleep. Doctors call it nocturnal penile tumescence. It has nothing to do with sexy dreams. It's the body's way of keeping the tissue in the penis well supplied with oxygen-rich blood. You wake up with one simply because you often wake up out of REM sleep.

What it tells you
- Still getting morning wood, but struggling in bed? The plumbing and nerves are probably working. The cause is more likely stress, performance anxiety, alcohol, tiredness or relationship issues. That's good news, because these are very fixable.
- Morning wood has mostly disappeared? That points more towards a physical cause, such as blood vessels, diabetes, low testosterone, or side effects from medicines.

Why that matters beyond sex
The arteries in the penis are smaller than the ones in the heart, so they often show trouble first. ED is now recognised as a possible early warning sign of heart disease, sometimes appearing years before chest pain. So losing your erections, morning or otherwise, is a good reason to get your blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol checked, not just to buy pills.

Things that reduce it (temporarily)
- Poor or short sleep, because less REM sleep means fewer night erections
- Heavy drinking the night before
- Age. It naturally becomes less frequent, but shouldn't vanish completely
- Some medicines, including certain antidepressants and blood pressure drugs

Simple takeaway
Occasional mornings without one mean nothing. But if it's been gone for weeks or months, especially along with trouble in bed, see a GP. A simple blood test and BP check could pick up something important early.

Sleep well, cut back on the drink, keep moving. Your little bro and your heart will both thank you.
