Individuals like us even collectively cannot help long term and stop-gap measures will not help this child until he finish education and find his first job.

Only government has the most resources to help this child long term and give him an equal shot at getting the right education and into university and getting a white-collar job.

But given the child's circumstances, most probably he need to work 10 times harder than his peers because his distractions are more than his peers and plus no parents to guide his growing up and development etc, it is very against the child.

Most probably his grandmother will pass away before the child grows up and he will never know his roots, his parents nor his grandparents. Poor kid really.

If he is lucky, he still can catch a glimpse of memory of his blind old grandmother. I thought such scenes only play out in China.

This is no more a question of self-reliance, upgrading , being hardworking, finding a job etc. Such people really need help and deserve long term help from government.

Hope MCYS will not repeat the 2007 question on this child and blind old lady : " How much do you want? Do you want three meals in a hawker centre, food court or restaurant?"

IMHO It is vital that we do not use any charitable initiative to push up any political agenda. Forget Politics, Find Solutions. GST was raise from 5% to 7% "to help the poor" which was PM Lee's reason. So Singaporeans pay more GST.

But later there was scandal CDC staff receive 8 months bonus which PAP MP Teo Ho Pin approve thus becoming legalized and not considered scandal.

So you see, Singaporeans are already contributing everyday and now still must ad-hoc contribute to the blind Grandmother and child. It does not make sense.

I am staying nearby and have observed this scene many times recently. I am very disturbed because the young boy glace (yan shen) looks very much like my son. I always eat hokkien mee in the smoking corner and observe them for a good half hour and often left with a choke in my throat. Never did I knew that the young boy parents are not around anymore. There was once around 930 pm when the old lady finish her work and there was a younger (mid45s - 50) man come and collect the monies. I thought it was her son or something, now then I recalled that he only collect the monies but not the makeshift table.

I very much want to help but the stuffs she sells are not to my use ie, wan bao/ horse racing etc. We cant wait for the government anymore if this continues because I realised that one day wait is another day of suffering / lost for the young boy. I strong believe he deserve a decent meal / toileting/ education. I am not rich but I dont mind parting few dollars per day just to make sure this kid is well taken care of.

This family is obviously an over sight by this society and it should not be this way. This should not be the way.

Like the TS, I also feel paiseh because I am too minute to stand up for them. I can at most give them a fish but no idea how to lend them a fishing rod. How can I contribute?

Drop by 339 Amk the other afternoon. Dont know if its the right place, then saw ah ma setting up her makeshift blue table and ah boy helping out ah ma set up the table.(touch to see a small boy helping out his ah ma). Ah boy's carton box and sleeping bag was beside the stall.

Sat at the kopi shop nearby, ordered kopi and some finger food while seeing ah ma and ah boy set up stall..Ask the kopi uncle about their plight, kopi uncle told us ah ma will always be with ah boy when she mend her stall. Ah ma's eyesight is not very good due to her age and ah boy will sleep beside the stall when he's tired.. Kopi uncle says they stay nearby, am glad to hear they are not in a state of destitute.

After the stall was ready went over, talk to ah ma and found he to be a very sweet nice lady, bought a wan bao and gave her some token amount, told ah ma to keep the change and buy ah boy some toys. Ah ma say Thank you!
Went off for dinner appointment after that, will drop by again to see how they are doing..

Think they are already getting some help as ah ma is operating from the Red Box in front of the UOB tellers..

Just now went down to visit that grandma's at her newspaper stall. Her stall just beside the coffeeshop at blk 339 AMK. She is very friendly. Her eyes sight really seems like very serious. There were cases where destitute old folks being force/put in the homes eventually ended up having their life shorten because of NOT USE TO THE NEW ENVIRONMENT plus many other reasons and restrictions etc.............

Update:

Blind grandma is 63years old and her blindness was caused by flying hot ashes from helping her mom to burn joss paper many years ago.

She and her husband were running the newspaper stall till he died of a heart attack in 2007.

She has a 25years old daughter (3 miscarriages and a newborn died due to lack of oxygen at birth before this daughter's birth), 2 grandchildren aged 7 and 3 and a Malaysian son-in-law. Her daughter and son in law are living and working in Malaysia. Cos of the elder grandson is studying Primary 1 here, she is helping to take care of him. (Please refrain from discussing of her unfilial daughter cos this thread is not about her but her mom :o)

She stays in Toa Payoh (probably a 1 room type) and travels to Ang Mo Kio to sell newspaper from 2pm till 11pm making $12-$13 daily without any extra spare revenue. She receives kind gestures from public and customers giving her canned foods and spare change when buyng papers from her. Due to her blindness, she's unable to cook (nor able to follow-up on social welfare scheme) and lives only on instant noodles and canned foods for 3 meals with a monthly electricity utility expense of only $10.

Social services visited her and will reply her today. Any other assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Please refrain from turning a "Just Cause" into a meaningless useless political debate as this would do more harm than good to them. Thank you. ;)

Donors should contact NVPC and make a donation through them directed to this receipent because there is also a chance if the grandma is holding cash with her, she can be robbed or scammed. This evening I went there at 830pm with the intention to buy all the items the ah ma sells (prepared $50) at the same time to eat dinner but ended empty handed.

As I approached the stall, I saw a somewhat familiar figure but could'nt make up is who. Then I realised is the media team when I saw the man with a professional camera. Maybe somebody arranged the boy not to be there as he is too young for such negative exposure. I took a peep at the ah ma table delibrating if I should just scoup all her items and pay her whatever it cost but I do not wish to do it in front of the reporter.

In the end I walked towards another coffeeshop to have dinner but am glad that at least the right media will levitate the pain for them in future hopefully.

Update:

Blind grandma is 63years old and her blindness was caused by flying hot ashes from helping her mom to burn joss paper many years ago.

She and her husband were running the newspaper stall till he died of a heart attack in 2007.

She has a 25years old daughter (3 miscarriages and a newborn died due to lack of oxygen at birth before this daughter's birth), 2 grandchildren aged 7 and 3 and a Malaysian son-in-law. Her daughter and son in law are living and working in Malaysia. Cos of the elder grandson is studying Primary 1 here, she is helping to take care of him. (Please refrain from discussing of her unfilial daughter cos this thread is not about her but her mom :o)

She stays in Toa Payoh (probably a 1 room type) and travels to Ang Mo Kio to sell newspaper from 2pm till 11pm making $12-$13 daily without any extra spare revenue. She receives kind gestures from public and customers giving her canned foods and spare change when buyng papers from her. Due to her blindness, she's unable to cook (nor able to follow-up on social welfare scheme) and lives only on instant noodles and canned foods for 3 meals with a monthly electricity utility expense of only $10.

Social services visited her and will reply her today. Any other assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Please refrain from turning a "Just Cause" into a meaningless useless political debate as this would do more harm than good to them. Thank you. ;)
