According to a lady friend of mine whose good friend does this job, the whole idea is to stall the victim on the line as long as possible by making the victim thinks he stands a chance to hook up with her. The more the victim sends messages to the particular operator, the more commission she gets to earn. Other tricks include moaning (which saves a lot of trouble having to engage the victim by conversations), giving very short replies so the victim has to keep messaging the operator to ask, or just basically beating around the bush. You know you've struck operator gold when you hear a PRC accent.
