I know 5k is high but I need the money as I'm going off to Uni in another few months. I have just finished Poly with no big burden on my own but I've got accepted to a Melbourne U. This is a 2 years programme. I almost have enough for the first year from my years of part time jobs, I just need a little more to tide me over the first few months there while I settle down and find another part time.

I want to explain myself better..

Dear TS why not you try to apply for scholarship? Or alternatively, you can try to apply from private companies which is related to the field that you are majoring in? Then maybe you can bond with the companies for lets say 5 to 8 years?

Hey all.. I really appreciate your advise. I really do appreciate them. Borrowing from relatives and close friends is not a choice as they are not really well off themselves and I don't wish to burden them or owe them 人情 as well.

I have applied for scholarship but it's not a full scholarship so I will still need quite a sum as well.. Plus living expenses such as rent, food etc.

tuition fee min AUD 30k per year
living cost around AUD 18k per year (AUD 1500 per month)
OSHC around AUD 400 per year
and haven included book fee, ticket and all..
5k is sooooo little to cover all of above

TS stated she will be in SG for a few months, so assuming she is starting next year, from now till then is only 7-8months?
taking 8months x 5k = SGD$40k

taking average AUD exchange rate of 1.25, she will get only AUD$30,000!!

anyway melb uni has the highest fees amongst all the melb universities, maybe TS might want to consider RMIT, MONASH, etc.. TS might be able to save a few grand of tution fees~

I did reply some previous questions but my post have not been approved by the moderator for some reason.

The reason why I chose Melbourne and not Singapore is because of the exposure I get for studying abroad. I have been accepted and granted partial subsidy for my tuition fees. I may even choose to get a job and stay there if all goes well after finishing my studies.

As for whether it is enough, yes I have done my calculations. I have applied for full scholarship but was only granted subsidized. If I pass up this chance, I feel like it's such a waste as it's a great opportunity. I am sure it is enough as I have my own savings from part time jobs + subsidized tuition fee + part time job's pay in Melbourne is quite good + I'm going to be studying part time there too.m

You are mistaken on the tuition fees of AUD 30k, it's actually 20k+ AUD (before the tuition grant). Rent is about 200 AUD per week. If I spend wisely, I am sure I can make it through.

In my opinion, studying abroad will definitely be a plus for my future as the uni that accepted me is one of the top university worldwide.

I have considered SBF's advices and will try every one of them before accepting any offers from SDs.

I got to know SBF from a friend after I told her about my situation. She said I could try if I wanted to.

Getting a degree is impt .... However, recent times, take a stone n throw into the crowd ..... Quite sure will kenna a degree holder ....
I think more critical is how to strive to do well ... With or without the degree.
I've come across diploma holders who beat some degree holders hands down in terms of job performance, critical thinking, going beyond the call of duty.
I've come across ITE grads who strived very hard to get their diploma and who went on to perform better than some degree holders.
I've also come across ITE grads who went on to get their degrees after attaining their diplomas. And I have utmost respect for this bunch of ppl whom I had the honour to work with ..... Going the hard way to get their degree .... They treasure it very well and are the best degree holders that I love working with.
To sum up ..... That paper may or may not mean much if the holder can't live up to it ......
Enjoy ur education journey .... Whichever path u adopt.

I would really like to thank those that gave me good advice and encouraged me to find other ways other than an SD. I have even received emails from some people who are genuinely trying to help me, rather than take advantage of my situation. For example, one guy even offered to hire me as an employee in his company in Melbourne so I wouldn't have to 'sell myself'.

I really appreciate it. If I'm not able to fund my studies through proper means, then I'd rather not go so I wouldn't have this SD episode on my back for the rest of my life..
