Need some advice here.

i am working in an MNC company and is reporting to my boss that is based in HK. he is an foreign educated hongkonger and is very well travelled. i have worked with him for 2 years already and have travelled a couple of times in HK.

anyway i suspect he is a very much a cheongster as well. ( Who can resist the china and macau scene rite?) he knows about GL area and commented once to me that GL population consists of ipoh gals that are "re-exported" from KL. also on one of our regional trip, he took a one day leave on friday and ended up in BKK for the weekend and met me on Monday in our destination city.

So all in I know that he is very much a cheongster like us. Do you think its a good idea for me to initiate cheonging together e.g. KTV or GL trip? Would that be negative or positive in terms of working relationship or my career? Who knows he may be an active samster here..kekeke

The first time I cheong a health centre, it was my boss who jio me. I was working on an urgent project for him personally and had to work overnight for for many nights to rush out his project. The day we delivered the work to the client, he brought me to Executive to help relief my tired muscles.

The first time I cheong a Bangkok pole-dancing bar was with another boss. We were there on a business trip and his tip to me was "some customers like their girls, rough"... I was thinking "okay~..."

Based on my experince when I used to work for someone else, it would be advisable to guage the situation first. Ask yourself where do you stand in the relationship with your boss, what kind of image you wanna to project to him and how much risk you are willing to take.

For the 1st question, it appears that you are quite close to your boss and he seems to wanna to jio you like that from the way he talked about such thingys. So it boils down to whether you can click with him or not. No point going to cheong with someone you can't click with. My previous managers used to cheong. Some I like to cheong with, others I tried to avoid as much as possible after finding out their bad habits like no tipping and drunkness (after drunk, have to send them home in their car, take a cab to collect my car and then report to work at 8.30am while he takes half day off!). If you worried that your boss will be offended if you declined, this type of boss will not advance your career much.

Secondly what kind of image do you wanna to project. Don't think that the office wouldn't know about it especially if your boss used company accounts. Personally I don't mind as the nature of my job requires me to do a fair bit of "socialising" with suppliers and clients. The company people know as the bills for HC and KTV are sent to the account department.

Lastly it is a double edged sword when cheoning with your boss. It can work both ways. I have a collegue who used to cheong a lot with our manager. But a few sessions of drinking and KTV, my collegue would get too comfy with the boss and started talking freely. Somehow along the way, he must have offended our manager as he was not jio that often later (aka kicked out of the inner circle). Sometimes alcohol or the comfy of the surroundings make us think that we are very close to the boss which can be quite mis-leading. From your posting, it seems you have little working experience. Your boss is a lao jiao, you never know what you said will offend him. That's why I always try to avoid alcohol as it loosen tongue too much.

My advice is to play along with him. Wait for him to initiate first. If he jio, go along but try to play act a bit first rather than show your true self. Then just go with flow.

i hv never cheong with my bosses before since i believed they also want to maintain a status in front of their subs. however, i had this time when a supplier chio my boss to go ktv. we are in the prof consulting svcs and everytime its proper biz talk and serious conversion so i wouldnt think of how wild supplier can be. i cheong with my frens and i do go wild with them. anyway, wat the supplier did must be a shocker and boss had a second opinion of him. like when he was drunk, he will attempt to be violent, talk nonsense, saying the wrong thing to my boss. after that, guess wat, my boss dropped him like hot potatoe the next day, telling me to reconsider future projects with him. so to hv a beer and stay sober is fine. doing the ECA with bosses is fine, but hv to act more cool towards the whole thingy. not all hell breaks loose. i cant do it, so i dun cheong with the bosses even though i know they v gian thru the conversation. just waiting for someone to organise one. my 2 cents worth.

I work for a MNC and have many business counter-parts and bosses from overseas.

Normally, after dinner together, I would ask them whether they want to go for a "walk". If they say yes, it normally means they want to cheong. Then, I will asked them if they want to go to cheong-ing places.

However, if they say no, then, I backed off.

By asking them for a walk, ,it is not too direct and does not implicate myself too.

However, we must always be clear that work time is work time and never confuse work and cheong time.

how it started for me? i am a joker in the company. and soon enough, i got invited to cheong with first the small direct boss, and later, the bigger boss. always bringing laughter to the parties. like a muse. u know, when everybody just arrives in a ktv, after the drinks ordered, but before any songs can be found, there will usually be an awarkard silence? what i did is always to quick-punch-in some hi-tempo songs (3 or 4) to get the mood going first, and then do small talk/joke with everybody, and always sing songs that are mid to hi tempo (never sing sad-till-wanna-die songs). and later in the party, when alcohol level in everybody's high, i will start doing some crazy things, and initiate the girls to join me. all for the fun of the party.

i learned these by observing my si-fu - the sales manager. he is truely a 八面玲珑, 面面俱到 PR king...

and never ever use your closeness to the boss during these parties to brag in office or gain favours on work. u will be kick off before u can say "fuck".

My advice and let the boss initiate. Never give the impression to your bosses or colleagues that you are a cheongster.

I made the mistake in my previous MNC company. I arrange for bosses and colleagues to GL, KTV, FL, HC, etc sessions. So when they can't contact me in the daytime, the impression is I must be doing these vices (sometimes true, hee hee). When the sales are down, they will gossip about "you and your china gers", etc etc.

So, my advice is better don't show you are "Lao Da" for the vices at the workplace. Can always make friends with the SBFers here to cheong. BTW, bro Evo3 invited me to his DC sessions, very kind of him I really appreciate that.

I remember a friend telling me that if I want to climb up the corporate ladder dont be too close with your boss. Cos there may come a day when you have to make a harsh decision to leave for your own good, you cant do it cleanly cos you are emotionally attached. Then we gathered he did not want us to see him in the drunkard horny state as we may lose respect of him. Well somehow there is some truth I think. I try to cover up on my cheonging style in China and my company does not have expenses to entertain customers for our business. A rarity in China. So when we went to SZ again, we have an entourage of overseas visitors and he wanted to impress them. And he wants me to arrange something. I told him bluntly I dont cheong in SZ. He was damn pissed. Wanted to bring our customers to KTV but paiseh to tell me. Then end up in a KTV thru a friend recommendation. With most of the customers are big bosses they are shy to pick girls, so I have to be like a pimp and sit by them introducing the girls. Oh I feel cheap...

In summary, I think we should keep this line drawn and clear. Some bosses can joke and click but others may just want to make use of you. But this is part of life and we should learn to be street smart. This has to be experienced and not taught. See as you deem fit then..

actually, it all depends on your boss' type. some v wan face type, dowan u 2 see the wild side of him, scared tat u dun respect him as much anymore, scared he lose control of u, some v stingy & cheapskate type, etc. gotta be smart 2 know wat type your boss is. if he dun like u 2 cheong wif him, then dun. but if he like, then go ahead, this is oso 1 way of rubbing shoulders & getting closer wif higher mgmt. it is double-edged sword.

wif another boss, he is a director from europe. he came 2 shanghai 4 a 3 week stint. 1st outing, it was a normal invitation by our female colleagues 2 go dinner in a western restaurant, followed by going 2 pub. about 11 pm, the gals wanna go home. after sending the gals up the cabs, tis director commented tat it's abit 2 early 2 go back 2 sleep, given tat it's a friday nite. i said i'll go 2 my favourite pub. he asked if he could come along, i said ok, n we clicked from there! 2 or 3 weeks after he went back, it's my turn 2 go europe. we met up in amsterdam, n he brought me 2 cheong around, not only in amsterdam, but oso across some european countries!

when I was working on a european MNC project in taiwan, even b4 I reached taiwan (i was in europe 4 discussions about tis project), my Project Director, a european guy, was telling me 2 hurry back 2 asia n go taiwan, cos no 1 is there 2 organise & control my guys. he even "dangled" some goodie, saying a budget has been allocated 4 team building events 4 my team (i havent seen nor know any of my team members yet!). 1st outing, juz normal dinner & back home. 2nd outing, some of my subordinate guys started talking about some nitelife when we were smoking outside the restaurant. from there, we went cheong occasionally, wif some of their personal frens 2! when we cheong, we even went 2 rural towns 2gether 2 search 4 new cheong lobangs. when we were in KTVs, i was 1 of those who got naked 1st wif the gals, n ending wif bj, in front of everyone!!!

whenever the european team came 2 taiwan, we cheong like there is no 2molo, almost everyday!!! n I seem 2 be the cheong leader, while the Global HQ Manager acts like my 2IC (I m Asia Pacific Team Leader), commanding the group. My AsiaPac Director, a European guy, joins us & even leads us on some occasions. but we oso observe the same rules above. so u can imagine how tiring it is, working like dogs in the day, cheonging like no 2molo in the evenings.

ironically, after the project phase in taiwan completes, during the days we were wrapping up, several of our colleagues started turning up late for work, late or missing the daily morning meetings, including the Global HQ Manager himself! there were 1 or 2 times, all the ang mos were not in the office 4 the daily morning meeting. my director asked if we cheong the nite b4. I said yes, n he was unhappy (difficult 2 explain 2 client). then suddenly, he asked if i m a robot, working tat hard during the day, then cheonging almost every nite until tat late, n I can still come 2 work on time in the mornings??? i juz said, well, i gotta get my priorities rite. I dun wanna let all these cheonging affect my job performance, otherwise, i wont be able 2 enjoy my privileges anymore!!! he is impressed...

several of these bosses wrote a damn good appraisal 4 me. when I left the company, they even either offered or referred me job offers, some even recommended other Consulting firms 2 look for me!!!

bottom line, 2 cheong wif your boss, muz observe the above rules strictly. not easy, especially on the part of going 2 work on time the next morning. i dowan others (esp my superiors) 2 use it as excuse 2 blame me, i oso gotta set example 2 my subordinates if i expect them 2 observe strictly 2!!!

I also recently went oversea with one of the boss to China,and at there we almost cheong every nite entertianment with supplier KTV /Massage & pub w/o fail for 5 days after dinner.
Best part is everynite we bring back at 2-3 gals till the 3rd day nite after KTV we each bring back the gals to hotel,my boss call me say he will pass all 3 gals to me cos he is tired.So can reject took all of them in and told the gals no to say anything in the morning if anyone ask with each getting tips of rmb 300.Next day supplier asking us how the arrange so we both say good.:D

Even when back ther are tend to have some kapo ppl in office tryiing to find out more ,but too bad rule of the game is to keep the shut.
