Agency boss: I made error of judgment
THE managing director of the matchmaking agency that matched 64-year-old Fan Kiet Teng with a young Vietnamese woman has resolved to conduct more vigorous checks on the men who walk through his door.

Mr Mark Lin, from Vietnam Brides International Matchmaker, admitted making an 'error of judgment' in Fan's case because he was a 'neighbour'.

'I live in Bishan, he also lives in Bishan. I had my shoes mended by him before,' he said in Mandarin.

But, he added, he did not 'accept business' from every man who visited the agency.

He told The Straits Times that Fan was not the first man to try and con the agency. 'For instance, a 60-year-old man told me that Goh Chok Tong once worked for him and that he earned over $10,000 a month. I didn't trust him or accept his business.'

The Fan saga has convinced him to introduce formal checks. All applicants will now have their records checked at the Registry of Marriages, he said, and men over 60 will be turned away.

'Those above 60 who are not married are either lying about their marital status or have some problems,' he said.

He agreed with the severity of the sentence handed down to Fan and District Judge Jasvender Kaur's proposed guidelines to protect foreign women seeking husbands through agencies.

'He (Fan) can always go to a prostitute. Why must he hurt an innocent girl like that by cheating her?

'I support these guidelines. I have three daughters and every day I pray that my Vietnamese girls will find good husbands.'

Mr Lin said he had already called Fan's victim, who is now back at home in the Vietnamese province of Tay Ninh, to tell her about the jail sentence.

'She wants to thank the Government, and the police for arresting Fan and not letting him get away and continuing to hurt other girls.

'She says she still wants to marry a Singaporean man, as her friends say they make good husbands.'

Personally, i feel that the agency boss is 75% responsible for the case. How can he just release the gal to the man before the actual marriage or before the cheque is cleared? He is just too eager to make a quick buck. For his greed, the vietnamese gal had to suffer for around a week. Bros, what's your idea?

Agreed with you that the agency boss should hold a certain degree of responsibilties.

I think that his agency's license should be suspended or even revoked. As most businessman, he is eager to make a quick buck and neglected doing a proper check on the old man.

New rules and regulations should be imposed on their industry to pervent & deter such cases from occurring again. However, they are bound to be some loopholes and until someone detected or had committed an offence, it will not be revamped.

I agree with both SingViet and Cherri_Popper bros.

It was the agency's oversight and 'eagerness' to close yet another business transaction that led to the poor gal being exploited and used. It must bear some responsibility, to say the least. Well, I sincerely hope from now on, every marriage agency will adopt even more stringent checks and qualifications on male individuals who knocks on their doors.

As for the law, I agree with SingViet bro because laws are enacted to act as deterrents. It is definitely not fool-proof or watertight. Like what SingViet bro has mentioned, it is only when a crime has been committed that the loopholes will appear and only maybe, plugged. My views on the law part is that we can have a million and one laws to protect the innocent but it only takes one individual with the sole intention of committing a crime to break through all the deterrents there are.

Ultimately, even after the conviction of the individual/s, the person who'd suffer the most would have to be the victim. The hopes of marrying a Singaporean were dashed completely (therefore it would be not her fault to be extra wary of all Singaporeans henceforth), the shame of being used as a sex object, and the consequences and ridicule she'd have to bear with when she goes back to her home country.

The above are solely my views and it is not meant to offend anyone or any business. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks and have a happy and healthy 2006 bros..

Cheers

Till now, the law doesn't seem to hold the agency owner any repsonsibity. This make the whole saga unjust. The court only punishes the old man, but did nothing to the agency owner. This owner keeps trying to act blurr and shift responsibilities. To think that he will even come up with the excuse that he will not cater to man above 60s from now on. Its not a matter of man above 60s that will commit this offense, its a matter of him overlooking the details that caused all these problems and sufferings for the poor gal. I am sure that if there is a 70 year old man knocking on his door again and willing to pay the price, he will take the business also. The owner and all his excuses... Sigh.....:(

In some certain new trade, there are always trial and error. Maybe other matchmaking agencies WERE also like him, eager to push business but so far nothing of this nature happen so they thought is the "norm". It jus unlucky for this Boss that he is the first one to kena con. I mean so far, if nothing happen the bosses will think its ok but then they never expect that Singapore got these kind of jokers who go and con them and the gal. They never expected it.

It's ok to make a mistake, but learn from it and never repeat it.

jus my humble opinion

I notice that only when something serious happened that our garmen start to do something to tighten up. Just like the NKF saga, the SAF drowning case, etc.

As I see it, there are lots and lots of other things that could go wrong and yet, there is simple not enough checks and balances.

One thing I do not understand - an old man like 64 years old can be allowed to marry a young mei-mei? Any restriction of age or income etc....

I'm surprised that the Viet girl took it in her stride. He still wants to marry a Singaporean. It goes to show most Sing-Viet marriages have been successful.

But now that the Viet girl is no longer a virgin, I wonder if the agency will give a discount. I'm not intending this as a joke. Just a practical consideration.

Bro SingViet, possible to find a Viet graduate as wife ? I'm planning to hunt down Hanoi for a Viet graduate. Please advise...thanks.

What the viet gal said actually came from the mouth of the Agency owner... i serious doubt if his words can be trusted.

As for Viet graduate wife, they are mostly not in this match making thingy Bro. When a viet lady is a graduate, 6 out of 10 are the same as Singaporean ladies, much more demanding. I do know a local cantonese family with a sweet looking daughter who still has 1 year plus before she completes her economics degree, the mum asked me to recommend a good singaporean man for her. But she only wants chinese.... :D

What? Match making for a local grad gal and sweet looking somemore! Any good gal would be more or less booked during her 4 years in the varsity. Cannot be still available - what is still available are either "something wrong" with her, or split up w BF or due to some other reasons la.

Aiyoh bro, situations in Vietnam are different from singapore. In a conservative family in vietanm, the gals are disciplined very strictly by their parents. They cannot anyhow go out with parents' consent. But i do not deny the fact that there's a possibility of her be bonked by her bf. But from what i know of her family, there's a high chance that she is still single and available. :D

You are probably right. The agency owner may just be trying to playdown the mishap, which none other than the agency owner is to blame.

As for Viet gradudates, if the ratio of bad apples is 6/10, it's not bad at all. Of course I know they are not into this matchmaking thingy yet. But I'm wondering how I should go about 'hunting down' all these graduate girls.

Any tips, bro ?

Even if fate is the ultimate answer, it must also involve methodology. If I don't make any effort in searching, I'll never know what fate has installed for me. If I search for 10 in my life and find one, that is fate. If I search for 1,000 and find one, then that is an even stronger statement of fate. But if I just sit back and wait for fate to come at me, fate will probably say you are fated to remain single.

Only when you have tried your best then you appreciate the work of fate.

I feel that fate strikes when u unexpectly. But if you do want to try only on graduates, then it may be a bit tough. Do try on this website (www.vietfun.com), they have both overseas vietnamese and local vietnamese looking either for friends or husband. :D

Most gals would be staying in the hostel, so got more freedom ma. They might tend to fool around with the new-found freedom, at an age when they wish to discover themselves and discover bf as well. Afterall, there is this thing called curiosity.

The Viet girl is too poor to be able to engage a lawyer. Otherwise, she can sue the agency for negligence.

But how to measure damage for virginity lost ?

But how to measure damage for virginity lost ?

Maybe this formula??

Damage for virginity lost = price she was able to fetch when she was virgin (she probably does not qualify for selection anymore) + difference in standard of living in sgp and vn (cos she would have been married over here) for 10 years (arbitary figure).

I think the old man should be sentenced to a longer term, with charges like fraud, rape and even kidnap....

Pity the girl...how to find another SG man to marry, ...some more not virgin very hard to find good one

Sure old man again

Deep Blue

First the old man had to be punished more severely; it is an outright case of cheat. May I know what had the government done to resolve such matters from happening again? I believe there should be an authority that can come up with some rules and regulations to control this? The government should be good at this; I mean they even tell us when we can U-turn on the road.

Then the agency, did the owner do anything to compensate the poor girl? Don’t tell me about his three daughters, I wonder if this had happened to anyone of them he would take it in his stride. Afterall, it is just a business to him. What matters now is the reputation of his business. Come on, shunt away customer above 60s meaning those below are Mr. Nice guys? Perhaps he is still dreaming, or perhaps his time has yet to come then.

It saddens me really. I have seen some of the girls parading in the agencies. It's something of a fashion to them because matchmaking via this route has been ongoing for 20 years in Vietnam. It's a terrible thing to do to a virgin.

Yea.. sometimes when i see the viet gals going thru all these shit, i kind of feel sad for them. Its like their parents selling them off for some little cash. Isn't this the same as prostituing themselves? :(

Thats the life of a Vietnamese woman.
If you are born poor and have no chance of education, what hope do you have? The only valuable "asset" is their virginity and their parents realise that.
Well, if she has some good looks, she can still make a living in the entertainment line. But let me say this, if you just wait at tables, you get paid about 1 million dong a month. Thats about SGD 100, or SGD 3 a day.
Guess what, its not even enough for them to take a motorbike "taxi" to and from home to work. Thats why so many of them resort to "selling" themselves, in one way or the other. It has become so accepted that they don't even realise what they are doing......sad huh?

Sorry for the intrusion, I am a little confused with the ideas shared in this thread. Maybe some bros can shed some light.

On one hand, there are claims that Vietnamese gals who are poor can only make small sums of money in prostitution. On the other hand, I read messages like it cost USD150 to bonk one of these gals for a nite. This is quite a high sum when compared with the reportedly low sums of money that these young Vietnamese gals make. How do we reconcile this? The OKT earn the majority of it? The authorities tax the majority of it? etc?? or some other reasons.

Hope this posting is not offensive to any bros. I just want to find out a little more.

Bro...if u are referring to my post about them making very little, I was referring to their "decent" job of waiting at tables, not prostitution.
In HCMC, the price of banging varies drastically.
You can get a screw for as cheap as 200,000 dong or about SGD 20 if you are adventurous enough to take offers from gals riding around the city in bikes. On the other end of the scale, you have to fork out as much as USD 200 to 250 if you want to screw one of those gals in the popular nite clubs.
