Next time when you get a cab who is staying nearby your place ask the uncle if he want to have a regular customer.

Surely he wants a regular rather then ply around the neighbourhood finding for fare

Ideally no surcharge no booking fee

Bro, taxi driver do a living. No surcharge no booking fee, the best is to flag on road.

I remembered once I told the taxi uncle that I need to go 2 locations but I need to exit taxi to do some tasks and he need to wait 15 minutes. As I am running late, I met lunch crowd. Taxi will be in demand at that hour too.

I told the uncle that I pay first, later I come back and he start meter with booking fee as I am indeed running late. He agreed and he did waited. The two locations arrived within 1 hour inclusive that I took 15 minutes for my task.

The story is, you wanted something, you have to give up another thing. There is no best of two worlds, unless you drive the taxi yourself.

8am is peak hour timing. Everyone is calling cab and as taxi driver, will you take a street fare or a booking which gives you $3.30 more in booking fee?

If calling a cab is still must wait, then you can book a cab the night before. Just $8 extra and you'll have a taxi waiting for you.

Want the luxury of flagging a taxi off the road and paying cheapest fare? Arrange your trip to be between 9:30 am - 5:59pm and your taxi fare will be cheapest.

Other timing and you expect to pay sine sort of surcharge.

miumiu6464
22-06-2015, 11:26 PM
By the way, 8 am is not really the sort of timing that taxi drivers want for a regular customer. Most drivers start driving at 6am. By 8am, he could be far across the island from where you are sgd you expect him to empty car travel to you're location for no surcharge no booking fee?

Very hard.

Being a cab driver, we take 4-5hr to cover our rental and diesel cost. Then another 6-7hrs to make a living, u think is costly to take a cab? From a cabby driver point, is y the rate have not increased since customer have increment every yr.

We have to drive 12-16hr to make a income to mantain a family of 3. Morning is where advance booking takes place, thus most will be rushing to booking pickup instead of sweep the road.

Bro,

If you have to drive 4-5 hours to cover rental and expenses, I guess you're the sole hirer of the cab right? My best advice to you is to get a relief before you burn out with fatigue.

On the other hand, if you're driving half shift and need to drive 4-5 hours to cover the half rental and expenses, then it'd better you get another job. Driving a cab is not for you.

One tip, try waiting at short time hotel. Most chances you get fare for 2 location, which with midnight surcharge, cab get up to $30+.

On advance booking, it's only worthwhile to take advance booking for your first trip of the day. Other time? You're giving up too much for the $8.

But one thing huh, many of you week disagree with me.

Taxi fare in Singapore is cheap, even after factoring in the surcharge. Take a taxi in places like Sydney over the same distance and the fare can easily be double what you're charged here.

These days i took taxi. The fare easily clock $12~$15 for a 10minutes journey. Some taxi driver said that weekday need 3hrs in the morning to cover rental and fuel. Rest of the day is meal break and income.

COE premium, IMHO cost around $69388 per 3652 days. This average out to $19 per day. Taxi Rental IMHO cost around $117 per day. $117-$19 = $98 not attributed by COE premium. So High cost on taxi rental cannot be due to High COE premium.

Hi Bros & Taxi uncles,

I'm indeed puzzled by the new entrants like Uber & Grab Taxi into the taxi scene. How do these companies make money when all they do is only on Cab bookings? They don't have rental taxis for hirers and all the passengers' paid fare go to the taxi drivers. What do these companies earn then?

Kindly enlighten. Tnks.

miumiu6464
24-06-2015, 01:07 PM
I think they do get a share of the booking fee...? IIRC, companies like comfort also get a share of the $2.30 / $3.30 booking fee.

My friend, who was a member of those walkie talkie group, pays a monthly subscription fee that's valid for up to a certain number of bookings. Then, after that quota, he has to pay the walkie group $0.50 per call / booking.

That's why companies like comfort is very hard on their driver if their driver no show for current booking or advance booking. They even go to the extend of banning the drivers from taking advance booking jobs for repeat offenders.

Taxi COE is 7 years. I not sure if it's pro-rated or not.
If not then 69388÷2557=$27 per day. Per taxi the company earns at least $50 x 2557= $127,850. But also have to factor in a few not hired out. About $100,000 per taxi over 7 years.

Uber takes 20% of the fares but return some as incentives if u hit certain number of trips a week. They claim minimum $5000 in fares a month for their drivers. Minus 20%, cost of car, petrol, ERP, balance about $2000. Not a great deal.

Actually you may be right . If all the car owners bid a higher COE ; naturally the price of COE will go up. But if all the bidders one fine day decide to just bid as low as possible then naturally the price for the COE will definitely drop. Do correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

Haha. Car dealerships bid on the behalf of car buyers. Car buyers don't actually have a say in how much they bid for their COE. Even if we bid individually, we may bid "as low as possible" but there will definitely be people who are willing to pay as much as it takes to get a COE ie. $70,000.

Maybe TS wants to share cab with other. Put up a notice asking anyone going to the same destination and same timing with u, keen to share taxi with u. Sometimes, to save some money, I would take mrt to the nearest spot of my destination then I take taxi into there. E.g. take train to bedok then take a cab to be bedok north St XX.

Taxi COE isn't for 10 years. But I agree with you that the bulk of the cost isn't incurred by the COE.

COE of taxi has been revised from 7 years to 8 years, but the rental is still not came down.

The flag down rate and charges depends on rental. Rental depends on COE + car price + insurance + maint. cost etc etc.

If rental is $117, it should be a standard taxi (i.e. flag down rate from $3.20 to $3.90). An OMO taxi driver must earn at least $130 to $140 to cover. $117for rental and $12 to $20 for diesel (depends on taxi company and where you pump)

If lucky, pick up customer back to back, no taffic jam, peak hour charges (25%) If every trip is 10km, it will earn about $10 to $11. If average travel at 70km/h and all traffic lights are green for you, it takes at least 8.5 mins for 10km. If from customer open door, asking, checking, travel, collect fare, without argument, everything "shun shun" and "chop chop" it takes 10 mins.

To cover cost, it must take 14 trips, 140 mins (very idea). Provided customer back to back and no delay. (On call still need to travel to customer location, ie empty car, ie milage running no income).

Facts : There are taffic jam, there carpark gantry, traffic lights/juntion, disagreement or argument, etc etc. If can earn $30 per hr in average, to cover, 5 hrs. If lucky to have on calls for 50 of the trips, $35 to $40 per hr, 3.5hrs to cover. If that day you super lucky, blind also kick gold bar, advance call back to back, no jam, traffic smooth, $50 to $60 per hr, means cover cost in 2 .5 hrs.

Question, who can super lucky daily ?

Taxi driver no mc, no leave, no CPF, no bonus, bear own repair cost most time, traffic offence, >44 work-hrs per week etc etc.

Hope it helps to give you guys a better understanding of a taxi driver.

TS already mentioned that 'not always late', means sometimes overslept and needs to rush to work place and cannot find empty taxi plying the roads at that particular time.

So asking those who are taxi drivers to enlighten, why no available taxi on the road, no need to pay for surcharge and no need to pay for booking.

and also taxi company pays for the servicing, maintenance and all those systems they install in the taxi

Hi to all,
saw all the post. Jus wanna update . Being taxi driver have pro and cons. And epically about rental. U can use a normal sonata as $117- this and that. But have u minus the other such as maintain.?? Road tax and insurance? All this calculated into ur per day rental.

For third party apps , they earn thru call booking. Imagine u jus received order and despatch to whichever company driver. U received $0.30-$1. Depends on wat kind of call u despatch. So if one day ur call booking e.g is 10,000 so u can calculate how much u can earn. And also bear in mind, u need not pay for the taxi fleet maintain. And also driver who wanna use ur apps , have to top up their account first before can use the apps.

So being a taxi driver have to be really street smart. As I m driving limo taxi. Normally I start work at 4am and my first customer is 4.30am(advance booking) and by 6am I should have cover my rental and diesel(half shift and rental is $85). And cfm have time go ......

As for a Ts complaining no taxi on the road. Pls mind u, the timing u looking for taxi is wat time and I can cfm u mostly the taxi is already sending pax to either town or tuas area . U expect them to come empty and pick u without surcharge?? Why dun u try it urself. If u really so wan a taxi, Pls book a limo cab . Sure cfm have and the cab sure wait for u 15mjns early before the time I requested

Am a Sunday only relief taxi driver. I drive from 7am to 7 pm . I expect to break even after deducting petrol and rental by 12 noon. Have a quick 45 mins lunch and drive till 6.30 pm whereby wash taxi and top up petrol. Its a hard life but I need the money to support and supplement my child education. Met nasty customers at times but that's life. I do not choose customers and routes and that is why I sometimes driveaway from Changi airport without a fare after dropping off my passenger. No point queuing because you might get commuters going to Pasir ris or tampines
