G'day everybody

I have frequent karaoke, FL and Geylang for nearly 40 tears. I spent majority of my money on these area.

Currently i am in my 60+ earning low income. Unexpectedly i get some health issue and need money for hospital bill. I resort to borrow money for my medical.

Now then i know i wasted my health on kway teow.

So gentleman. Think before you spend your spare money on fun.

What sort of health issues are you facing? Not all treatment costs the earth. There could be cheaper options.

No right or wrong. If one thing we never spend on, we will still be spending on another. Now hard is life and cost of living high. Regardless how much we earn and save will also be not enough. We still have to work till we die, even if you be good boy and never go paid sex at all, you might still lose out in life if you never get gf or wife. In the end also the same.

Especially when you are high sex drive kind, best is to spend on releasing, if not you might end up on newspaper with sexual crimes.

I think that you mainly lands urself into such a situation due to poor financial planning which seems to happen to a lot of people. They thought that the salary will goes upwards forever n they will never be laid off whatsoever.

The cruel reality is that the older u r, the higher chance that you will be retrench. So without having a proper retirement plan in place, one have a high chance of ending up poor towards when they are old.

That's when the collect cardboard, cleaning plates ...etc happens....

Maybe lesson learn here is more like have a proper plan as u age and dun ever overspend. :D

if it is "spare" money then whats wrong with spending it on having fun?
the problem arises when you didnt make enough spare money to retire and chose to retire.
it is not with spending your spare money for some fun.

i know alot of cheongster who are in their 60s and is retired comfortably.
some still have load of passive income without having to work .
my best buddy here is one perfect example, i strive to be like him ;)

depending on the location and the market. the best source of passive income for me is from investment( property, dividends etc).

and CPF life is a pretty good source of income too, i am jealous because we dont have that here in thailand.

How to retire in your forties without earning a fortune

18 Sep, 2018 6:30am 4 minutes to read

Experts say anyone can Experts say anyone can "go from broke to never needing to work again" by saving 50 per cent or even 75 per cent of their salary each month.

Daily Mail

Thousands of middle-earners are retiring in their forties with no mortgage and £25,000 ($50,000) a year to spend, it was revealed today.

Experts say anyone can "go from broke to never needing to work again" by saving 50 per cent or even 75 per cent of their salary each month.

These "super-savers" then invest it in property and low-risk shares for ten to 20 years and bank the profits every year, according to the Daily Mail.

The financial independence retire early [FIRE] formula - an idea born in the US - is inspiring thousands in the UK to achieve the ultimate aspiration of giving up work.

Experts say you need a nest egg equivalent to 25 times your annual salary to retire early.

This means that if you must have £25,000-a-year ($50,000) to live on you need to work towards a nest egg of £625,000 ($1.25m) made up of savings and returns from investments or buy-to-let properties.

If it is £50,000 ($100,000) then that amount grows to £1.25million ($2.5m).

The other battle line is to eliminate a mortgage using the half of the salary people don't save.

The Holy Grail for anyone who wants to leave work before 65 is saving - because if you want a scatter-cash lifestyle then you will pay for it in many more years at work.

Many take their inspiration from the 5:2 diet, meaning for full five days of the week they do not spend a penny only allowing themselves to have any outlays on the other two days.

London accountant Barney Whiter, a married father-of-three from Farnham, Surrey, walked away from work at 43 by saving half his annual salary after tax.

He then invested all of it in low-risk stock market funds and shares, bringing in up to 12 per cent return every year for 19 years while also paying down his mortgage.

A big house, eating out, expensive holidays, new cars, cable TV and non-essential shopping were all banned so the Whiter family could stick to their £24,000-a-year ($48,000) budget for all spending.

Frugal Mr Whiter made sure he built up a net worth of 25 times his annual spend - £625,000 ($1.25m) - in savings and investments.

And the result was retirement around 20 years before his colleagues, which he said 'is the best thing since slice bread'.

He told The Times: "If you can save 50 per cent of your take-home pay, it will take 19 years to go from broke to never needing to work again. If you can save 75 per cent, it will take seven to eight years.

"You need to have the mentality of a marathon runner or triathlete and be able to delay gratification. For most people money is leaking out of their life like a bucket shot full of holes".

There is an army of super-savers in the UK, many gaining inspiration from U.S. and British websites that advise on how to become mortgage-free early.

More than 100,000 people are said to be using blogs produced by FIRE proponents including Mr Whiter, who calls himself "The Escape Artist".

Earlier this year more than 900 people tried to get into a London pub to hear a talk about the formula, spearheaded by Canadian Peter Adeney, who retired at 30.

Mr Adeney's blog Mr Money Moustache gives people a step-by-step guide to retiring in a decade or less.

Mr Whiter threw all his energy behind his plan to retire in his forties.

He drove a battered second hand Skoda for years and cut spending to the bone while his children, now teenagers, grew up.

But he insists it was all worth it.

He said: "Tasting freedom is the most intoxicating thing and I wouldn't ever go back to full-time work. I'd rather cut my lifestyle back. My highest value is freedom and self-determination and being able to do what I want to do".

Debt kills u.
Repay any debt asap, and u can really accumulate wealth fast.
Cut unwanted recurring liabilities.
Its not a need, its a choice.
U can skip pay TV and save several hundreds a year.
Not owning a car saves u even more. This difference can be incredible. Over a 10 yr period, total cost of owning a car can come out to 200k including taxes, maintenance & fuel (adjusted for inflation).
This 200k if u managed to plow it into the US stock market 10 yrs ago, is going to pay u 3 times excluding dividends (profit after investment cost)!
The difference comes out to be 800k over 10 yrs! (be 200k poorer, or 600k richer).
So sometimes, something as simple as a car could turn out to be the difference between being broke or being a cash millionaire.

Mortgage is a bit different. Because usually your property will earn more than your mortgage interest in the long term (10 yrs or more), unless u bought your property in a place where even birds dont wanna fly there.
Why pay off mortgage earlier if u are earning more than the mortgage interest every year on your spare funds?

Saving money alone is not enough. U need to invest using your savings.
Diversification is key when it comes to investing. Never throw all your savings into 1 investment.

Forget aiming 12% - 15% average compounded yearly returns. These are probably high risk and can wipe out your capital before u even earn back your investment cost.
More realistic to aim for around 5% - 7% compounded yearly for diversified portfolio.
Dont be too greedy. Be patient and realistic on your investment targets.
When u are still working and have reasonable income, do not spend any of your investment returns. Plow it back in and reinvest more!

Yes absolutely correct. Diversification with stocks, mutual funds and bonds with different levels of risk vs gain potential is key to success. Also there are some cyclical stocks. Invest in those at the season when those are low and sell in the high season. Discipline matters. Also consider politics ... If investing in US stock market then invest in defense stocks while republicans in power but get rid of those before election debate heats up. Don't put all eggs in same basket.

the ones who bail out when the market is down loses.
majority of investors are such, whether is novice or professional. All scared shitless then times are bad.
investing really tests your character more than many other things in life.

When u invest in funds, be careful about fees. Fees can eat a lot of your returns over many years.
I dont go for mutual funds anymore as fees dont justify their performance. nowadays i DIY. Most fund holdings actually mimic stock index like >80%. 90% of fund managers dont have any skill and perform badly against stock index.
Fund managers basically bluff money one. And most fund managers become fund managers not because they're good, but because of their connections (or parents' connections).:D
