I have been a silent reader of the myriad collection of interesting stories on SBF for years and decided to contribute one myself.

Prologue: Scarlett

I was born in a normal Singaporean family. Growing up in a HDB, attending a neighbourhood school on the eastern side of Singapore. Being rather intelligent, I easily went through my PSLE without a hitch and without much effort. Rather than going to a good school, my parents decided that I should be able to shine bright if I go to a neighbourhood school. I personally disagreed with that train of thought, now that I looked back but it certainly gave me a very colourful time as a teenager which will form the spine of this story here.

Secondary One, with my results in my PSLE, I was immediately placed in the top class of the Express stream. I was full of pride and of course, hubris made me think that I can breeze through all nine subjects without studying. So what I did, was to focus on skirt chasing and finding a girlfriend.

The girls in my class weren’t the best looking and do you remember how we would be very picky when we were much younger? Obviously I wasn’t going to be chasing any of them so I looked outwards. One fateful day, I met Scarlett in a bowling alley at Safra. My friends and I were playing pool then, she was part of a girl’s school bowling team.

She was cute as hell, I just walked over and initiated the first contact and passed my Nokia flip phone to her, “Hey, I am Seth, can I get your number?”

Chapter: Scarlett

Scarlett: “Sure!” She blushed.

Seth: “Hey, do you want to hang out after your bowling training or something?”

Scarlett: “I can’t. My dad’s coming to fetch me after training. How about we meet on Friday?”

I was crestfallen. It was basically checkmate. I didn’t want to seem to pushy and of course, last thing I wanted was an angry father. Anyway, I wasn’t a patient boy, 3 days later was way too long but it seemed that I had no other options at that point of time.

Seth: “Ok! Sound good.” I smiled

Scarlett nodded and beamed. “I need to head back to training!” With that, she turned and with a whip of her ponytail, ran back to the alley.

My friend, Seng was impressed. “Wah like that also can ah?”

Seth: “Focus on pool please. Eight ball, corner pocket.” I shot the ball in and won.

The next few days were spent texting Scarlett. It was non-stop texting and I went over my 300 sms limit in a flash.

Then came Friday, I met Scarlett at East Point (Or maybe was it White Sand? Can’t remember) and we were still in our uniforms. (Didn’t think about bring clothes out back then)

We were happy, catching a movie, taking neoprints together and just walking around the mall. We went up to the roof to sit, away from the bustling lower floors.

I held her hand, Scarlett flushed red. It was one of the cutest sight in my young life so far.

Seth: “Scarlett, I like hanging out with you. Today is one of the best day of my life. And I am with the cutest girl I’ve ever known.”

Scarlett: “Cute is ugly but adorable?” She pouted. It was adorable as hell.

Seth: “Hey, I mean it ok!”

Scarlett went even redder, scarlet just like her name. I held her hand more tightly. “I like you, Scarlett.”

I leaned in, gave her a peck on her cheek and hugged her.

Scarlett’s expression was a blank. I couldn’t tell what was she feeling.

“I like you too, Seth but are we moving too fast?”

“I don’t know. But I really like you a lot.”

Scarlett leaned in, she gave me a deep kiss. I was lost, having not done that before. Then she stuck her tongue into my mouth, twirling my tongue with her own.

“Wow, this girl is fierce!” I thought to myself. It was my first timing making out. This went on for awhile and we continued just hugging after.

Soon, the sky was getting dark. Both of us had curfews so despite our desire to just stay together, we had to go home. I walked her down the stairs from the roof.

“Scarlett, dear, today is the best day of my life.”

She gave me the sweetest look, “Thank you baby!”

Seth: “So, you are a deer and I’m a baby?” I laughed and gave her a peck on her forehead. “Text me when you are home ok?”

With that, she nodded, beamed at me and went up the bus.


I was walking home when I heard a girl shouted my name, “SETH!”

Chapter: Scarlett I

Seth:”What do you want?” I answered brashly. Just had a good day and I wouldn’t want the gossip girls having a field day in school tomorrow about Scarlett and I.

Elise: “I saw you with that girl and you guys kissed!”

Seth: “Get a life, Elise. Find a boyfriend or something. Oh yea and maybe mind your own business.” I was rather annoyed with my very gossipy classmate. I put on my Walkman and walked away.

Elise was affronted by my lack of sensitivity towards her. Truth be told, she craved the attention of the boys in class. She loved to be seen as one of the “popular” girls. I intensely disliked her bitchy nature and attention seeking persona.

Elise ran after me and tugged at my shoulder. “Eh, why are you so unfriendly? Just wanted to ask you about your new girl.”

I took off my Walkman and said “Give me a break. I just had a fantastic day and you are just going to spread it like wildfire tomorrow.”

Elise: “Seth, why did you not find one of the girls in class? I am just curious.”

I frowned and raised my brows. “You guys are not my cup of tea. Not in terms of looks nor in terms of personality. And now if you excuse me, I need to go home.”


The next day..

“Seth was kissing a girl!” That was legit the first I heard when I walk in from school and into the parade square.

“Aiya, sure ugly one la his girlfriend.” One of my classmate, Joy said.

Seth: “You are one to talk. With your ugly mug and your especially repulsive personality.” My already Low opinion of my female classmates dropped even further. “If Scarlett is ugly then you probably look like the carcass of a pig that got ran over by a bus. Piss off.”

Tears filling up her eyes, Joy ran off. Elise ran after her.

By recess, I was labeled as a guy who made a girl cry and made out all over the place with a girl. It was a bad day. I texted Scarlett, “Hey dear, can we meet today after school?”

“Ok! Miss me ah? You will need to look for me near my school”

I smiled and replied “Duh, see you later at Katong Shopping Centre. Love you!”

“Love you too, xoxo”

That made my gloomy day brighter by quite a fair bit. I certainly didn’t thought about what came next. Elise passed me a written note and in it was a confession and how jealous she was yesterday. I folded the note into a paper aeroplane and threw it out of the window once she turned away. Call me an asshole but I just wasn’t attract to her. I was just waiting for my 2nd date with Scarlett.

Chapter: Scarlett II

I took a bus down to Katong to meet Scarlett. Blasting my Walkman with a soundtrack from Arctic Monkeys, Marcy Bum

“Well, can't we just laugh and joke around?
Remember cuddles in the kitchen, yeah
To get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it's right hard to remember that
On a day like today
When you're all argumentative
And you've got the face on”

I was reflecting about what happened today. Making that ugly pug of a girl Joy burst into tears, Elise’s confession, my “reputation” as a jerk and deviant who made out with girls everywhere.

“It was one girl. One action from me cause such a hug reaction. If I played on a higher level, I will probably get an even worst rep.” I thought. I cannot control what others might think or say, so I reached a conclusion. “Screw it.”

I dropped off opposite Roxy Square and walked over to meet Scarlett. She was smiling. Her lips were so mesmerizing because they outlined such a beautiful smile. I went over and gave her a hug. Hand in hand, we walked over to Teo Heng to have a singing session.


Let’s fast forward a few hours from the normal dating stuff..


We walked to the park connector behind Katong Shopping Centre and started hugging and making out. My dick was stirring in my pants and suddenly, Scarlett was caressing it through my pants. It was a peculiar sensation. I never had a girl touch my dick before. It felt good, electrifying and I got harder.

I instinctively put my hand on her right boob, I gave it a little squeeze. I felt her face getting hotter and she became more aggressive when we were making out.

Suddenly, we heard someone shouted “Oi!”

We broke apart from our kiss and we ran. Right back out to the main road.

Seth: “How do you feel?”
Scarlett: “Scared. It was quite adventurous though.” She gave me a naughty grin.
I laughed and teased her a little. “Can’t say that it didn’t cause me to jump. Lucky you didn’t buy my tongue off when it happened.”

I walked her to the bus stop, waited for her to board her bus before I went home.

Next few days at school, an interesting development begun to unfold...

Chapter: Scarlett III

Soon, my bad reputation caused some of the school bengs to come after me.

“Eh cb, I heard you bully girl ah! Make girl cry sibo?” Darren yelled. Darren was one of those stereotypical fat hooligans in school.

You know the typical secondary school gangster groups in school normally consist of the following: One guy with a fearsome reputation, one fat guy, a few skinny henchmen and a short boy who tagged along in the group.

I was a fearless guy. I couldn’t rely on my friends or classmates. How many times has it been when they abandoned me when things got real. In my head, I played out the possible scenarios and I concluded no matter what, I wasn’t going to come out unscathed in any confrontation. Even if I walked away or run, they will still be waiting. So I decided to just face the problem head on.

“Sure, I did. At least her tears were genuine. When they tear in front of you, it would be tears from laughing at your fuck face.”

Darren was stunned. “I see you outside after school at the block opposite. One on one.”

“On.” I had no fear. But later I found out that I had severely underestimated the different weight class when it came to fighting.

The first thing I realised about those hooligans in school was that they have no honor. One on one my ass. A whole group of them, at least 15 of them was waiting for me in a circle. In the middle was Darren. I calmly strode in the circle and Darren shouted “Knnbccb, you dare you to lao lan with me ah! Lai la one on one don’t hit face”

One fundamental thing I realised after that confrontation was not hitting face or throat was a trap. Fighting a fat guy without punching vital spots was like fighting a tank with a handgun. I contemplated going under the belt and kicking his groin or breaking his nose but if the other 14 guys jump me, I will be dead. (I’m not even sure whether they carried weapons)

Needless to say, I was not ashamed to say that Darren knocked me into next week. He shrugged off every punch I landed on his torso and when he retaliated, each punch made me step back due to the body weight.

The whole encounter only ended when someone shouted “Police!” The entire group disappeared with their tails between their legs. I calmly walked back home, still reeling in pain due to the nearly suicidal confrontation I had.

Summary for next few weeks:
1. Meeting Scarlett
2. Making out and petting
3. Word got out about my loss in the fight and more people want to try fighting me

Then that was the first time I met Scarlett’s bowling team mate, Carmen. She was cute. A different kind of cute from Scarlett. She was the type that was quite nerdy.

Carmen saw me with Scarlett when I came to look for Scarlett during training and when Scarlett went to the washroom, Carmen came over and asked for my number.

Carmen:” Hey, I want to know you better. Can we exchange number?”

Seth: “Oh ok. 9xxx xxxx”

It was literally at the same place where I first asked Scarlett for her number. Little did I know, this will soon lead to the end of my relationship with Scarlett.

Chapter: Scarlett IV

It was literally at the same place where I first asked Scarlett for her number. Little did I know, this will soon lead to the end of my relationship with Scarlett.

I didn’t tell Scarlett about Carmen. On the hindsight, I should have because things started to go south from that day.

Carmen texted me daily. Texting Scarlett have already blew up my SMS limit. When Carmen joined the party, I went over 1000 SMS-es in a week. Needless to say, my folks weren’t too happy about it.

Carmen thought that I was cool, aloof and so so sweet to Scarlett that she wanted me to be her boyfriend.

Life is a multiple choice question so I had the following options:
1. Reject her and stay with Scarlett (Heavily leaning towards that)
2. Choose her over Scarlett (Not in a million years)
3. Accept her while keeping Scarlett (Sounds like a good idea)

So I chose option 3, forgetting that they are team mates on the same bowling team and the whole situation exploded in my face.

When I went to Safra to see Scarlett during her next bowling training, Carmen ran over and confronted Scarlett.

Carmen: “Seth is my boyfriend now. What the hell are you doing?”

Scarlett looked at me with an incredulous expression. “What is going on, Seth?”

I was lost. This was such a bad play that I was done for. Regardless of what I answered. I decided to just tell the truth.

Seth: “Dear. Carmen came over to me while you were in the washroom last week. She asked for my number.”

Scarlett: “So you just gave her? Am I not good enough for you? Or are you just a fucking jerk?” Her eyes started watering.

Carmen: “You need to ditch her now, Seth! You know I am better.”

In my head I was thinking “This Carmen was a psycho, what have I done?”

Seth: “No. I’m sorry, Carmen. I just didn’t know how to turn you down. I only love Scarlett.”

Carmen went ballistic. She walked to me and gave me a slap. Then she walked over to Scarlett and with a vicious grin said, “You know what my plan is? I want Seth. Truly. Your guy might not have chose me but I managed to break your trust in him. Since I can’t have him, I'm just going to smash your already broken toy, and making you watch.”

Scarlett: “You are right.” And she walked to me and gave me a second slap to my face. “You and I are done. Clearly, having me wasn’t enough for you. You had to entertain this girl. This is all meaningless. My feelings for you. How perfect you were for me. If it ever meant anything that moment has passed.”

Seth: “Scarlett, no. It was a mistake! I didn’t know how to say no!”

Scarlett blanked me and just walked to the ladies. The whole commotion drew some of the other girls from the bowling team. They were all talking but I just walked over and stood outside the ladies, waiting for Scarlett.

She came out after 30mins with bloodshot eyes but she had a resolute expression, “Seth, I don’t think I can accept what had happen. It’s over.”

Seth: “Ok. I’m sorry. You are still the best thing that ever happened to me. I stand by that. I am sorry for hurting you. And I hope you will find someone better than me.”

And with that monologue, I suppressed my tears, gave her a nod and I left Safra. My heart felt like it was shattered into a million pieces. That was the last time I saw Scarlett. I never saw her again.

Episode: Sze Ling & Sheralyn I

This was probably one of the most dramatic stories of my dating life back in secondary school. Even more so than the entire kerfuffle with Scarlett and Carmen.

I was hanging out during recess and after school around the school’s basketball court. It was quite the norm for Chinese boys that age to pick up basketballs. That was how I met Sze Ling and Sheralyn.

Description of the two girls:
Sze Ling is a petite girl, with cute feminine features and ponytail. She was demure and sweet.

Sheralyn is taller and very athletic. She played for the school’s basketball team. She had a tomboyish look with short hair and a stern expression.

Both of them were good friends back then, belonging to the same clique of girls, all of them basketball players. After chatting up and talking to them, I began to be attracted to Sze Ling. She was so innocent and sweet, soft spoken and polite. In contrast, Sheralyn was brash and loud, I don’t dislike her though. Just thought that the soft spoken nature of Sze Ling was more attractive back then.

I also think that Sheralyn is cute in her own way so I was rather torn between my feelings.

There was one problem though, Sze Ling was attached to a guy named Miles. Their relationship were rocky then, I was quite sure that will be an opportunity to take Miles out of the picture.

I was an asshole back then, I immediately crafted out an intricate and convoluted plan.

1. I will go after Sheralyn, get together with her.
2. Become part of that group of girls, depending on how things go, cut out either Sheralyn or Sze Ling from the group
3. Try to break up Sze Ling and Miles
4. Either way, I win. I will end up with either of them

The one thing I miscalculated was my own conscience. I grew to genuinely care for the both of them. Here is how the story goes...

Seth: “Hey! Wanna play ball together?”

My friends, Dublin, Xiang and I approached the group of girls. Physically, we might have outmatched them but they were skilled as they were school team players. My only advantage was my height, above average shooting accuracy and that my shots have a high arc that made them hard to guard against.

It was a first to seven basket game and we barely won barely won 7-5. I must thank Xiang for exceptional playmaking, which allowed me to score a beautiful 3-Pointer to win the game. That, of course, impressed the girls.

“How do you shoot like that ah!” Sheralyn exclaimed.

“Shoot with a 50 degrees arc with the elbows close to the body and then keeping elbows close to together when you raise your arms to shoot. Let your fingers softy glide the ball out of touch and fall away in a follow through.” I tried to explained scientifically. It was really physics.

Sze Ling: “Come here and show us!”

I walked to the free throw line and prayed that I didn’t miss the next one. Then I managed to replicate my previous shot albeit at a shorter distance. I sighed a breathe of relief right after.

Fion, one of the girls in the group, was so impressed that she wanted Xiang, Dublin and I to continue playing matches with them. We weren’t about to ditch the chance to play with a group of girls and so we did.

We all exchanged numbers at the end of the day and Sheralyn immediately texted me the moment we parted, “Love your shot. Teach leh xD”

“Sure! See you tomorrow :)” I replied

I then texted Sze Ling, “Nice dribbling and passing. Looking forward to play again :)”

Within a few weeks of playing, I became a regular in the group. Dublin was going after Fion, which meant there were no conflict of interest.
Sze Ling was still with Miles, albeit arguing every other day so I began to execute my master plan.

I walked up to Sheralyn and said, “Hey, can we talk privately after playing later today?”

Episode: Sze Ling & Sheralyn II

Sheralyn: “Oh ok!”
Seth: “Can I send you home?”
Sheralyn: “Wah why suddenly so nice”
Seth: “Haha can’t I be nice to you?”
Sheralyn: “Ok la! Let you have the honour of sending me home.”

I walked Sheralyn to the bus stop and we took a bus to her place.

Seth: “ Is there somewhere quiet we can talk?”

Sheralyn nodded, she brought me up to the roof of the multi storey carpark next to her block.

Sheralyn: “Eh what you want to tell me ah? So secretive..”
Seth: “Eh, I think I have fallen for you. I really like you and I just like being around you, I guess.”

Sheralyn narrowed her brows and I could see her thinking hard. She didn’t know how to react but my calculated guess was that she saw it coming but couldn’t come up with an answer in time. It became a look-at-one-another contest for awhile, with both of us quietly looking at each other for 5mins.

Finally, she broke the silence, “I guess I feel the same way. But what do you want?”

I hesitated for awhile, for dramatic effect, and I gave her a shy smile, “I want to be with you.”

Sheralyn blushed like a tomato. She remained quiet though.

“You are something special. A work of art to me. Your smile brightens the darkest of days. The beauty of your heart is unmatched, it’s wild untamed, not in forever. And you are a strong soul, and that makes you what you are. Special.” I gave another of my powerful, prepared monologues.

She smiled, with eyes getting teary with joy. “Checkmate.” I thought to myself. I pulled her in for an embrace, encompassing her with my warmth. Her fruity scent filled my nostrils. I looked her straight in the eye and said, “I wish time would stop here and we can remain in this moment forever.” (Corniest line ever, but girls use to dig lines like this)

Sheralyn: “Yes. I like you too, Seth. Very much so. I don’t show this side of me to others because I am afraid of getting hurt. Will you promise not to ever hurt me? Will you promise to always protect me?”

“I promise.” I whispered as a ray of light from the setting sun hit part of my face, making my brown eyes sparkle.

Sheralyn shyly gave me a peck on my lips. I returned the kiss, using the trick that Scarlett taught me. I slowly snaked my tongue through her lips and twirl it around hers. She gave a gasp and returned the favour. Soon, we were tongue fighting in the sunset.

Her heart was racing and she was breathing very deliberately. As we kissed, I moved my hand to her neck, and she almost shuddered when she felt my hand on her skin. I pressed her against the wall, sliding my hands down her back. I pressed my body against her. It was like gravity, we couldn’t pull apart at that very moment. Her hands wandered down my chest and she slid her hand under my tee. Our skin contacted and adrenaline was just causing us to radiate heat.
She kissed me more passionately than I think I've ever experienced. We stayed in that parking lot making out for like an hour.

As I didn’t want to progress too quickly though, I gently pull my lips away and touched her cheeks. I gave her a light tug to follow me and we came to a ledge. There, we just sat down on the roof and had a long chat about what the future entails. This moment genuinely made me doubt myself, whether I wanted to carry out the master plan. Because I do have feelings for Sheralyn. But a voice in me was saying, “This is still early game. Things could swing any other way.”
I resolved myself to carry on for now.

Words that I am with Sheralyn spread like wildfire in school. The fat beng Darren from the previous chapter was playing as a center in the boy’s basketball team. Seeing that I am with a basketball chic, unbalanced him. He decide to challenge Xiang and I to a 2v2 basketball team.

It was a pretty anticlimactic game. Xiang is also from the school team. He played as a point guard and had excellent technical and playmaking skills. Me, on the other hand, was just a good shooter. Against Darren and his friend, Wee, both of them were more brutes who used their girth to bump off their opponents. We easily destroyed them 7-2 just by shooting from range and not fighting them where they were their strongest, under the basket.

“Knn, play like ah kua..” Darren scowled.

“They won fair and square! Back off!” Sheralyn shouted as she ran towards me. I gave her a grin as the rest of the clique had just arrived at the court. Sze Ling gave me a wink when our eyes met and I could feel butterflies up my stomach.

“We can always dance again if you want, Darren. If that ugly way of playing ball is what you call playing ball” I smirked at him.

“I AM PART OF THE SCHOOL TEAM! YOU CB!” Darren roared at me, copious amount of his spit flying everywhere.

“Sure, sure. You are such a great player. I’m leaving.” I grabbed my bag and left, the rest of the clique following behind me. I have better things to do than to argue against a beast.

“Sheralyn dear, I’ll send you home ok.” I wanted to provoke a reaction from Sze Ling.

“Wah wah, now the two of them want to pangseh us.” Sze Ling gave a pout. It was super cute and Sheralyn caught me staring at Sze Ling longer than I should have.

“Eh don’t come and seduce my boyfriend hor.” Sheralyn leaned over and kissed me square on my lips. I guess she wants to assert her dominance and show that I was her property. My plan was going swimmingly so far.

“Aiyoyo who dare to haha” Sze Ling laughed. “Ok la, let’s go home. You enjoy your naughty time with Seth!” With that, she boarded the bus.
