SINGAPORE: 39,490 babies were born in Singapore last year, but not all were born of Singaporean parents.

In fact, only 59 per cent of them have both a Singaporean mother and a Singaporean father. But if births where at one parent is a foreigner were included, then the figure goes up to 82 per cent.

Perhaps what is of great significance is that records of Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) show that Singapore men fathered 75 per cent of all babies born here, while Singapore women account for just 65 per cent.

Climbing the career ladder is one reason sociologists give for the low fertility rate among Singapore women, particularly among those with degrees.

Associate Professor Angelique Chan, assistant head of Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore, said: "A woman puts a lot of effort, time, overtime, into her work in her early 20s, mid—late 20s, then she gets to be about 30 years old and then she is thinking about marriage but it’s hard for her to find someone (at that age). The older you get, the more entrenched you get in your lifestyle....and it gets harder to adapt to another person."

If Singapore men are fathering more babies than Singapore women are giving birth to, then who is delivering the goods?

6,071 babies were born to Singapore fathers whose wives are Malaysians, Indonesians, Chinese nationals, or are from other countries in the region.

Some women from further afield have also been increasing Singapore’s birth rate.

Singapore’s Total Fertility Rate — which measures the average number of children a woman will have in her lifetime — currently stands at 1.29.

Among the Malay and Indian communities, their birth rates have fallen steadily from year 2000 to 2006.

While the birth rate among the Chinese community has crept up very slightly, it still remains the lowest of all the three races.

from the looks of things, i think ICA should consider loosening their restrictions on visas, so more of the foreign ladies can come make babies, to boost our birth rates.

If Singapore men are fathering more babies than Singapore women are giving birth to, then who is delivering the goods?

Possible Case 1
Robert - Marry foreign wife with kids. Buy 1 get many free.
Carrot - Marry foreign wife. After giving birth wife left.

Possible Case 2
Richer man sayang wife and worries wife can't take birth pain so adopt.
Stress factor here causes infertility result in adopting more babies.

Real Case
Foreign women are delivering the goods lah... So simple.....:D

Ok back to bro suteerak1099's comment, the restriction are already loosen so what is the main issue. The nation. Richer getting richer, poor getting poorer. Those who can see clearly will not want to take risk. Why put ourselve in to deep shit (debts - to give the needs to the kids) just to fulfill the government need. We aren't machine. As them go and fly kite.

One moment adjust the minister's wages and after increasing twice tell the nation not advisible to increase wages to off set the inflation. Without over coming the current problem how to plan further. In other words, plan ahead and die now. Siow!!!

well ... dun think anyone would be surprised ...

Maybe for those narrow-minded people ... yeah, maybe ...

To be mothers, women must be family-minded and place more emphasis on the family ...

And S'porean girls ? Well, not all but there are a lot that either a) very career-minded b) wants it all; both career and family but unwilling to sacrifice anything ...

So how to have babies, no choice for S'porean guys to import 'foreign talents'

All these problems could be solved if everyone simply used condoms.

Solving only the "men are fathering more babies" problem and more headache for the government to increase birth rate. hahahaha :D
Anyway is their own "Posion" that kills off the birth rate. Backside itch lah... introduce 2 children per household policy back in 80s lah..... now try hard to revert back hahahahaha tough.....

can someone elighten me???

1. SGD increasing in value as compared to USD and other currencies, probably with the exception of the euro. so, we sgreans should be able to buy more with the same amount of disposable income, no???

2. i just found out that a 10kg rice costs $10 more now!!! with the increase in value of SGD, dont tell me that the same packet of rice increased by 80%!!! but the rice producers said they increase only 20-25% mah... who the fuck is eating the 55%!!!???

3. everything else increased in price except for the bloody house brands. but, but, but i learnt from school that supermarkets make bloody much more from their house brands than anything else they sell!!! i tot gahmen supposed to help people instead of riding on the supposed inflation and make money??? no???

nothing to do with sex??? it is eating into my call-chicken budget!!! hehe...

Solving only the "men are fathering more babies" problem and more headache for the government to increase birth rate. hahahaha

since everything they also want to put 1 leg into it, might as well allow the minister to impregnate those single SG women above 35! it would increase birth rates, the sg women will get screwed by smart and rich men (that's what they want, right?) and then the gahmen can subsidise the child...

So....... actually, the sg ladies wont really be shelved, not unless they're really fugly, have dbl standard mentality that they're career women, n on the other hand harp on the woman's charter, while they expect to be married to some cash printing heir to some throne.

those that can make it, either net themselves a loaded chap, or probably married to never-land with some foreigner. noticed many have flocked to the UAE in recent yrs.

SG men marry foreign wives from vietnam, china and etc. Then, SG women also bo pian and gotta hunt for rich turtle overseas. Its a vicious cycle. Eventually, not many of the Singaporean husband n wife will remain.

The jaded singaporeans either remain single or c if fate can get them hitched. Its worrying. Soon, the Sillyporean population will die out cos' there isn't enough of "us" or the population is too diluted to be even considered "Singaporean". It prob won't affect the bros here, as we will likely to ve kicked the bucket when all these happen or going to happen.

I was at this training course. Most of the participants (who happen to be young also) come from different parts of the world. Those locals are minority and are really senior citizens. Scary siah....

Maybe garmen should abolish NS and reservist so that sg men has more time to "communicate" and make babies with sg women lol....;)

Joke aside, it is not just the quantity of babies but the quality of babies should matter too. No point encouraging babies but give no thought to their development after that....

men going to reservist or not is not the the hindrance that reduces baby making opportunities. the sad thing is when our woman aren't producing the goods, can't lay even an egg as grannies would phrase it.

these days, more r resorting to foreign brides, not only a source for more feminine intimacy at home, bt more spice in bed, as well as adaptive motherly instincts, over n above our local thorough-bred.

maybe it's time the ICA loosen up n start issuing 'maternity visa' (a 1st in the world), so to boost the baby counter on the charts. hehehehe... food for thought

well...to me i am not at all surprised by these results....

the living standard has gone way up too fast in singapore until the citizens cannot cope with it....everything increases so fast but the pay increment increases at a pathetic rate.....
Singapore men all have a standard way....studying till 20 something then go ns and then go uni...when they come out already mid 20s...and they have to work very hard to get their career....by that time the gers will be way above us...how to fight to get them?

Some singapore women also thought they big boss like that....bossing their husband here and that....but tell u something, their husband not singaporean.....

singaporean men if cannot get local brides, what they get? foreign brides loh....what to do?

Singapore men and women are just not compatible nowadays - there exists a great divide between the gender. Opening up the door to foreign brides and grooms is a good short term measure to bridge the divide. For those folks that are worried abt Singapore losing its identity, I do not think Sg has much of an identity to speak of - but I feel a cosmopolitan population is the way to go for Singapore rather than keeping it homogenous like Japan/Korea...:)

dun understand y we rant about FT? it is no secret that sinkieland is running out of pure citizen so we naturalise those moguls - if not 2020 no ppl on this island. we have no choice much is regretted in the recent times, especially the off-loading of FTs. bt i think, in order to increase the capita for local born, therein still wakes a big vacuum for 'baby making' FTs.

the authorities should come to terms with the reckoning of times, to make some adjustments so to achieve those goals set by the sage. in order to fulfill the capita/quota for local born future generations, its about time they consider ammending those rigid terms & conditions, so to better welcome more 'baby making' FTs.

should they continue to be ignorant to the increased vacuum, by 2020, the number of voters during GE, have all need to report to only 1 polling station. while the entire island probably is lumped as 01 x mega GRC.

I heard in Saudi, if the husband & wife are pure breed, their child will enjoy some of the country wealth.

In Singapore, next time the garment might reward pure breed Singapore Husband & Wife with free flow of ''Newater'' :D
