Geylang from a western perspective

Hi guys,

3 years ago I went to SG for the first time and this time I was really looking forward to it, especially to Geylang action... now I'm here.

Got off at MRT Aljunied, walked to Lor20, 18,... Quite sweaty walk, but not too far. Taxi is also affordable.

Let me try to compare to my previous visit. 3 years ago there were much more street hookers and I have the impression that there were also more houses. But OK, still many possibilities. And I have never been interessted in street hookers...

For me the most visited roads seem to be Lor18 and 20. Lor24 is a bit scary as heaps of Indians are walking around or sitting in dark places, but propably not dangerous there. If you walk to Lor6 it takes quite a while, in between not als Lorongs have houses. I prefer thai as I like their brown and smooth skin, they are also more open to westeners. Unfortunatelly such girls were really hard to find this time. The pale chinese girls are not really my type, but the thai girls here just look like chinese girls! ...? Was a bit different years ago. I think they are from the chinese minority in Thailand. Basically all the houses seem very similar to me: "Manager" sitting in front, you go in, see the girls sitting (mostly in a "fishtank"), you choose and pay, go to a room, shower first, action, leave.

Normally they ask me for $80 or $100 for decent thai girls. I guess that the price is higher than for locals, but if you don't wear short trousers not such big diffence, sometimes same. But in the end it is OK... I feel safe in this area (no crime + health check), that is more important.

Girls action is quite standardized and mechanic. So nothing to complain but never got something I will have long memories of. It is like "chicken rice" but not like "chilli crab" :)

I tried to find alternatives to Geylang by doing some online research.
- other red light districts: better go to Geylang directly. The others are smaller and not better
- massage: you cannot chose girl, quite often not pretty. So I go for massage only, but not with "happy ending"
- KTV: very expensive, no good value for money, rip-off
- Golden Mile Towers: They say that you find Thais in KTVs, prices between Geylang and Orchard Towers, maybe will check in the future
- Orchard towers:
On one side it sounds interessting - specialized on western customers, you can get to know the girls before the action. But on the other side there are some cons - no health checks, very dark and you could get an ugly fish without noticing ealy enough, dirty place, you need to take the girl to your hotel (no way) or go to a run-down hotel by taxi... not really sure if that is acceptable for me... Prices are quite high. And it is all unregulated and chaotic.

So after all I still prefer Geylang but I must say that I'm only satisfied, but not really happy!

Any recommendations for me are more than welcome, thanks!

It is comments like Taxi's here are so much cheaper than Europe that has kinda led to us locals paying more.

Sometimes, comments like this need to be kept to themselves, me thinks. It serves no good purpose other than rile up locals and gives more ammunition to the government to keep raising taxes unabated.

My two cents worth.

Yeah when I went to bangkok recently there situation there also spoilt by foreigners like us ... Seen many asian some with Singaporean accents just hopping into taxi driver who refused to switch on taxi meter a flat fare 100 baht (sgd 4.23) from nana to asoke Bts at 2 am oh god that's rip off we created this social problem to local thai who complained their taxis now only take foreigners like us can pay... I am refused in end walk to asoke lots of taxi who willing to go on meter...
The morale of what I learned is when we are aboard enjoy the cheaper cost of living as tourists we cannot be the same group who help to create a social problem for local who lived there ...

Hello Harry,

As another ang mo expat I shared some of your experiences and concern. I went in Orchard Road a couple of times and I have to say I had a good time there but it can be expensive (and absoultely avoid the massage there: way too exp!). I had no problem in taking the gal to my hotel though.
Went to KTV once. Spent a lot and got nothing. Never again. Never tried Golden Mile. Maybe soon.

Sometimes I book some of the gals advertised in the FL sections but there's always a bit of randomness involved and I had both very good and less than satisfactory experiences.

On the other hand, which houses in Geylang L18 and 20 would you recommend?

Play safe!
Bill

HDB overprice, car overprice, citizens cannot retired peacefully,a 1st world country with 3rd word pension rate....etc...government has more issue to tackle if dont want the locals ammo them at next election...if taxi fare raise up i think taxi drivers more eat air, anyway singapore air very fresh .......more locals will just take public transport.
