TT Rate is better but U need take note of TT charges. Bank Varies.
U can go bank's online website to chk the TT /cash /credit card exchange rates.
Btw online rate is showing 2.51 nw. If SGD con't strengthening, we should see 250 this wk.
No exchange rate quoted for SGD to MYR (maybank or cimb singapore)

Bro Lone Wolf, I had to transfer S$1,000 to someone in Mersing. She only have account with Bank Bumiputra so I have to do the transfer through Bank Bumiputra in Suntec. But BB dun accept S$ so they converted my S$1,000 to ringgit before proceeding with the transfer. For my S$1,000 my friend received M$2,500 on her side. Hope that clarify.
Anyways thanks for upping my points.
How about the bank charges and related processing fees levied on the TT transaction? The final effective exchange rate should be lower.
I thought Bank Bumiputra already merged into CIMB many years ago. In Malaysia, the name change to CIMB.
Is there still Bank Bumiputra branch in Suntec ?

Banks Display table varies. But you can see the diff in Rates
yes you are right cos there will b a TT charge. Eg $20 for TT will b charged on the person sending.
Example, TT $1000, TT rate 2.50, Cash rate 2.490
Sender -$1020
Receiver +$2500
Unless your exchange rate diff can cover the TT diff, else better rate thru money changer.
BTW JB Rate 248

There is some fee to be paid but I dun know how much as it is calculated all in inside the S$1,000. All I know is I give the bank officer Sgd$1,000 and my friend received RM$2,500 in her bank account.
Bank Bumiputra is at Suntec Tower One #37 level. The whole floor belongs to them. :D

Thanks. Look like the rate u got is more than 2.50 if it already included the related bank charges.
However, from the currency chart and the published rates at bank website for other currencies (as SGD/RM rate not available at bank's website), this rate is not possible as the bank TT rate normally cannot match the yahoo mid rate and sometime the money changer rate.

The 250 wall has already sustain too long already, with no reinforcement in the concrete, it finally collapse.
Actually malaysian ringgit did not devalue, against other currency it is still strong. It is just that sing dollar is appreciating, therefore exchange rate against the ringgit tends to be higher.
Sing dollar has been very stable and strong for the past years against most of the currency and no doubt it will continue to appreciate further.
With alot of foreign reserve and extremly low interest rate, value of sing dollar may continue to rise against other currency. :)

US economy is different from the rest. Even they do not have reserve, but their currency is widely accepted by the world as they are the global investor investing lots of money worldwide.
US currency over the years against the sing dollar has devalue alot and not surging.
From Feb 2009 it was at its peak at US $1 to S$1.55
During July 2011 it devalue again US $1 to S$1.37
Now just one year later July 2012 US dollar drop again to US $1 to S $1.27.
I believe in future if the US economy is down, the rate might go down to 1 is to 1.

Believe this time the ringgit may not bounch back so much to 2.4.
Maybe will drop back to 2.45 the lowest and may stabilise at the 2.50 mark.

Too many Singaporeans crossing over to live there has raised the cost of living for the locals. One of the residents there complained to me that the wet market now refuses to sell fresh fish to her as the fishmonger can get a higher price selling to the Singaporean makciks who now patronizes the market.
I did a comparison with some relatives living in other parts of Malaysia and the cost of living is easily 40-80% higher in JB than elsewhere in Malaysia.

Ya. But I think most of the blame should be placed on the locals instead of Singaporeans. They themselves set double standard cos of greed.. The vicious cycle goes on n they themselves get suck in. Rather than look at mirror and say I AM GREEDY, it is easier to push to someone else. Foreigners can always pack and go when place is 'over-priced'.
Singapore Economy has shrunken by 1.1% in Quarter 2 - worse than expected. Risk of a technical recession has increased. MAS may ease back to a modest and gradual Singapore dollar appreciation. Wishing all a nice Weekend. :) Cheers.

Report from ChannelNewsAsia dated 13 July 2012 :-
S'pore money changers run out of Malaysian ringgit
SINGAPORE - Some money changers in Singapore on Friday ran out of Malaysian ringgit notes after the favourable exchange rate sparked strong interest from buyers taking the chance to stretch their dollar by picking up ringgit on the cheap.
The Singapore dollar is trading at one to 2.51 Malaysian ringgit, after hitting a 14-year high against the Malaysian currency this week.
The ringgit is under pressure as Malaysia's general election looms and as investors exit emerging Asian markets for safer assets.
Sim Moh Siong, a currency strategist at Bank of Singapore, said: "I think part of the under-performance could be due to the drop in commodity prices, especially in terms of crude oil and palm oil. That seems to be an overhang on the ringgit."
Currency analysts said the ringgit could weaken further this year, on risks from Malaysia's upcoming general election.
This could push the Singapore dollar to 2.55 versus the ringgit within the year, before moderating to 2.45 by end-2013.
Saktiandi Supaat, who is head of currency research at Maybank, said: "It's a reflection also of how market participants see Malaysian assets and also the tolerance level of Bank Negara in terms of allowing some flexibility in the ringgit.
"The ringgit has fluctuated or reacted more than the Singapore dollar to Eurozone and global risks such as growth issues. The structural issues on Singapore dollar restrict the way it reacts."
Global economic uncertainty has caused investors to pull money out of riskier assets like emerging-Asia currencies as they opt for safe haven assets like the US dollar.
The Singapore dollar has also been attracting these investors.
It has appreciated 2.5 per cent against the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah this year.
Lee Chen Hoay, an investment analyst at Phillip Futures, said: "Because of the Eurozone crisis, it has increased the risk aversion in the market. And you even see things like Switzerland and Denmark being able to issue bonds at negative yield.
"So that means investors are willing to pay more money to get less, to protect their capital. And Singapore, being the only Southeast Asian currency with triple A, has an increased appeal."
Analysts said that should the Singapore dollar continue strengthening versus the ringgit, Singapore companies with operations in Malaysia could see profits take a hit.
However, Malaysian companies with operations in Singapore may see currency gains as they repatriate profits.

If JB is not safe and is a "dangerous" why S'poreans send their old parents to stay in "Old Folks Homes" in JB ???
Report from The New Paper dated 11 July 2012 :-
More S'poreans heading to Johor nursing homes
For some Singaporeans, growing old means living across the Causeway - in a nursing home in Johor Baru.
Home operators there say about 10 percent of their clients are now Singaporeans and they are getting more enquiries from Singapore families.
Many moved their seniors or disabled relatives up north, citing more affordable care.
Some, like Mr Tan Ah Song, 70, found a better living environment there.
Yet, others, like 85-year-old Madam Minah and 90-year-old Madam Yee, had no choice.
Just who are these Singaporeans living their twilight years in another land?
What are their stories?

Not exactly. Really depends on what currency you are changing. If you talk about changing to rupiah, then it is much better rate to change in indonesia. :p
However, if you want to change to ringgit, then arcade building at raffles place certainly give the best rate so far. The display exchange rate by JB money changer in town area is always about roughly 4 ringgit lesser than the rate display at arcade building money changers.
Example if JB money changer display rate is rm245 then the exchange rate at arcade building will be about rm249. The majority of JB money changers at most will add rm3 to their display rate e.g. rm245 + rm3 = rm248
There are many money changers at arcade building level 1 & 2, so when there is alot of competition, the customers are the one who benefited the most from the exchange rate as they will try to give the best rate in town to attract customers. ;)

17-07-2012, 11:06 AM
Sis asdfghjkl, the money changing business in Singapore is dominated by local Indian money changers. Many of them are Indian Muslims. They transfer money using some sort of "hawala" system. They telephone their friends in the money changer business and say exchange this amount of money for this rate, we'll reimburse you the amount later. Their business is based on trust and long term connections. They do courier large sums of money over from Malaysia. One of them wears a money belt under his clothes. The other is his chaperone. This is one of their weak points.

Report from The New Straits Times dated 17 July 2012 :-
New Malaysian banknotes now in circulation
SUBANG JAYA: The new Malaysian banknotes went into circulation yesterday and shoppers at Mydin USJ were the first to get their change in the new notes.
Beginning today, other supermarkets would have their cash machines filled with new banknotes, said a Bank Negara Malaysia officer here yesterday.
The officer said the new banknotes would co-circulate with the existing ones, which remained as legal tender.
The public will be able to obtain new banknotes through normal transactions.
The new series come in denominations of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100, while the RM50 note has been issued since December 2007.
The RM20 banknote is reintroduced and polymer substrate is used for the RM1 and RM5 notes.
The officer said all relevant parties had been told to calibrate their machines to accept the new banknotes.
The new banknotes are themed "Distinctively Malaysia", inspired by the country's culture, heritage and nature.
The new banknotes' enhanced security features include shadow image, clear window, watermark portrait with pixel and highlighted numerals, colour shifting security thread, micro lens thread, perfect see-through register and coloured glossy patch.
One of Mydin USJ's early shoppers, Dahlia Zainudin, said the new banknotes were nice to look at and creatively-designed.
Another shopper, Mohammad Azam Ikhsan, said the notes were distinctively Malaysian and unique.

Actually I would love to have new bank notes as it is clean.
Just use a microscope and look at a piece of old cash note say maybe one ringgit note. To your horror, you will be shocked to see there are million of bacteria crawling around the note.
Many people said the most dirty cash notes are ren min pi currency. It contain the most bacteria as compare to the other countries notes.
Maybe customer in china after fxxx already never wash hand and pay to the PRC WL. :o
The bigger notes should be quite clean as handle by less people. :)

Normally when a country does not have enough fund to use, it will start printing money, then the value of the currency will drop. :(
Unless printing money is a replacement, new note replaced old note or else tomorow you will get shock to see the rate becomes S$1 = RM3.

Bro asdfghjkl,
You really have good foresight. The reserve currency status which was shown in your link actually reflects the rise of the european nation economy in the last few centuries. :)
Portugal - during the 15th century, they are very advance and prosperous. Melaka was their colony at that time.
Spain - during the 16th and 17th century, they are very well off and trade with many countries. Philipine was their colony at that time.
Netherlands - during the 18th century, the Dutch are very ambitious people and expanded their trade in southeast asia making them very wealthy. Indonesia was their colony at that time.
France - during the 18th and 19th century, the french economy was very powerful. Vietnam was their colony at that time. Ho chi min city with lots of french designed buildings.
Britain - during the 19th and 20th century, Britain led the industrial revolution (they started the mass production) and dominated the European and world economy. They are also the global leader in international banking, entrepreneurship, and trade at that time. Singapore, Malaysia and Hongkong were their colonies at that time.
United states - During the 20th and 21st century, the economy of the US is the world's largest. They are also the world's largest manufacturer, leader in scientific research and technology innovation. Philipines was their colony at that time.
So who's the next economy superpower ? of course you're rite, the factory of the world or the most populated country or the awaken dragon. It has recently replaced japan as the world 2nd largest economy in the world. The woman from there has also make geylang to be more lively.... :p
Now S$1 = RMB 5
I doubt you will see RMB 1 = SGD 1 because the govt of china does not want to appreciate the RMB, afraid that money become big already later export product become difficult because nobody want to buy expensive goods. :D

thanks for spending the time to reply. you would realize that for the above countries, when their currencies were the world reserve, the latter were strong. nobody wants a weak currency to be the reserve currency.
by the way, China imported 315 mt of Au for the first five months of 2012 alone and this is even more Au than the entire holding of the UK at 310 mt.

DON'T YOU GUYS FEEL THE PINCH: The sad value of the Ringgit
Written by Lim Sue Goan
The Prime Minister has invited the public to post suggestions for the 2013 Budget to his blog and I believe that many would ask questions of personal concern. However, the best approach would be a proper financial management to help the national economy out of plight.
It is timely for Datuk Seri Najib Razak to advice officials of the Finance Ministry to properly manage the country's economy. The country is having a fiscal deficit for the 15th consecutive year, the priority should then be on striking a fiscal balance and reducing the deficit, or the debt will continue to increase and the country might end up in bankruptcy, like Greece.
Stock market record high but ringgit depreciating
The Malaysian stock market has repeatedly hit record highs, but the ringgit has been depreciating.
The strength of a country's currency reflects its economic strength and competitiveness, as the currency exchange rate fluctuations are determined by the currency's supply and demand. If everyone has no confidence and sell them, the exchange rate will fall.
For example, after world's factory China was recognised as the world's second largest economy, the yuan has been rising dramatically and it is expected to become one of the world's three major currency in five years.
The ringgit recently depreciated to record low of 2.5 against the Singapore dollar. Malaysians working in Singapore were so excited whereas local importers suffered the bitterness.
Malaysians used to spend strong ringgit in Singapore during the good old days but the situation changed. Singaporeans have now become "rich men" in Malaysia.
Net capital exporter for 5 years running
It was reported that Malaysia has become a net capital exporter for five consecutive years. In the first quarter this year, Malaysian companies had invested RM 16.9 billion abroad, an increase of nearly 15% compared to RM14.7 billion in the final quarter of last year. The outflow of capital has intensified the depreciation of the ringgit.
There are many reasons for the outflow of money. In addition to the lack of confidence, the repeatedly delayed general election, the deterioration of local investment environment and the reduction of business opportunities have all caused enterprises and businesses to invest abroad.
It is baffling that if the country's economy is really as good as described by political leaders, why aren't the funds inflowing, but outflowing? Particularly when other countries are lowering their interest rates, Bank Negara still keeps our interest rate at 3%. It might be because investors are not optimistic about Malaysia's economic outlook.
The outflow of capital will affect the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and thus, Najib announced the establishment of a RM1 billion Domestic Investment Strategic Fund to promote domestic direct investment. However, the tax structure is unreasonable, particularly the high corporate tax is a barrier to the efforts of attracting investment. Thailand adjusted its corporate tax from 30% to 23% this year, and 20% next year. Since we are unable to make ends meet, we are not able to cut corporate tax.
Revenue bottleneck but expenditure rising without check
The biggest shortcoming of the government's financial management is, the revenue has reached a bottleneck, while the expenditure is rising rapidly. After the fall of international crude oil prices, oil revenues will shrink. Only less than 10% of employees are currently paying income tax, but political expenditure has been increasing day by day due to the delayed general election. Therefore, the deficit is more likely to expand rather than reduce.
The country is currently facing other problems, including the global economic slowdown in which even China is unable to escape. The strange global climate is also brewing another round of food crisis.
In the month of Ramadan, the seventh lunar month and before the 2013 Budget is tabled on September 28, the market is expected to be sluggish. Let's see how Najib is going to stimulate the economy.

Singaporeans snap up Malaysian property as ringgit weakens
By Clara Chooi
July 22, 2012
KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — More Singaporeans are streaming across the Causeway to buy up property in Malaysia, taking advantage of the weakening ringgit which has fallen by 2.7 per cent in the past year to reach a 14-year low against the Singapore dollar.
Singapore’s Straits Times (ST) reported today figures from Malaysia Property Inc — an agency that promotes Malaysia’s real estate abroad — showing that the total transaction value of real estate here had spiked by 28 per cent last year to RM137.8 billion from RM107.4 billion in 2010.
Of the total, the paper said, two per cent were foreign investments.
Noting the trend, local agents have also been increasing efforts to lure Singaporeans into investing in the Malaysian property market through heavy advertising, roadshows and road trips for potential buyers to visit sites.
Citing property agency HSR’s overseas department head Donna Lim, the daily reported that the number of exhibition visits from Singaporeans alone had seen a sharp incline from last year.
Property agent Propnex was cited as saying that Singaporeans had purchased 50 units through them in the second quarter of the year, double the amount purchased in the first quarter.
Leisure Farm Singapore head Peter Lim said Singaporeans had bought 35 units in Johor’s Iskandar region over the past two months, compared to merely a dozen in the first two months of last year.
“The weakening Malaysian ringgit, the lure of owning landed property and familiarity with the country are reasons they (Singaporeans) cite for looking north,” the daily wrote.
But although the capital of Kuala Lumpur continues to have its lure, Singaporean investors are finding better familiarity with Johor and are particularly attracted to the state’s bustling Iskandar region.
Citing Malaysia Property Inc, ST reported that in the first half of 2010 alone, foreigners made up only four per ent of Johor’s property transactions for purchases above RM1 million.
“In the corresponding period last year, however, that figure shot up to 25 per cent,” the paper wrote. “Much of the demand has been generated by the buzz over the Iskandar region, earmarked by the Malaysian government as a major growth area for the country.”
According to Edwin Tan, director of the Paragon Residences @ Straits View Malaysia project in Iskandar, Singaporeans booked 116 units during a roadshow earlier this month while only 54 bookings were made by Malaysians.
Apart from Johor, the ST reported that many Singaporeans have also been venturing further up north in Malaysia to scout for potential investments in Malacca, Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Hunza Properties senior marketing and sales manager Lily Tan was cited as saying that Singaporeans account for some 15 per cent of the firm’s unit sales in its newest condominium Gurney Paragon in Penang.
The weakening of the ringgit against the Singapore dollar is expected to further stimulate demand. It has fallen by 2.7 per cent in the past year to reach a 14-year low against the Singapore dollar,”
