Where are all the real Singapore men? Alexis Ong laments the rise of the 'manscaped,' handbag-carrying, conversation-less local male.

Sometimes a friend and I play a little game whose main objective requires us to guess whether androgynous-looking guys are gay or just your garden-variety metrosexual.

It's pretty hard to tell these days, what with tight jeans, "manscaping" and stores that specialize in making the average Singaporean dude look like a lubricated human glowstick.

The most recent objects of our attention were two guys in a restaurant booth next to ours, heads bent over the table, giggling over something on an iPhone, and basically acting like a pair of teenage girls. For healthy, straight girls, I'm going to go ahead and say this kind of sucks.

Sadly, guys like these aren't anomalies in Singapore -- they're the rule.

To be fair, survivors of the post-apocalyptic desert that is the local dating scene might think me unnecessarily harsh, but after a lifetime living overseas, a girl can get pretty accustomed to some good chat. This elusive creature is almost non-existent in Singapore, save for a specific demographic of guys who know how to make a conversation tick.

Even worse, guys here don't really like girls who can. Case in point: at a friend's birthday party, the debate-happy side of me got slightly carried away in a conversation about music, and a guy actually said: "Um ... are you just like this? All the time?"

Uh, yes. It's called talking, and besides being a very telling extension of your personality, the rest of the civilized world seems to think it's a great way of getting to know someone.

The reality of the situation is, guys here just aren't used to dealing with a little spunk. Whether this is because of society's more conservative inclinations or a very Singaporean aversion to healthy conflict, studies have shown that people here are content to marry someone they don't even like.

Retired professor and relationship expert David Olson explained that people here are "afraid to say what they think and are afraid to disagree." A 2005 survey revealed that only 14 percent of Singaporean couples claimed to be "very happy" in their relationships -- within the "unhappy" camp, reasons included disliking a partner's personality or communication problems.

Personally, I blame the men. There are plenty of traditional old Chinese men in my family who just can't compute when it comes to dealing with a modern career-minded woman, much less a woman who speaks her mind..

There are a few perks to shopping at the local guy market. There's still an archaic sense of chivalry here that involves a lot of hand-holding, constant accompaniment, and this weird phenomenon of couples collapsed on each other in public places, as if they're both asleep.

The latter is a particularly fascinating physical example of the tragicomically codependent dynamic that defines many local relationships.

Guys here are either alpha-male dominant and aggressive (hello, CBD business crowd) or totally whipped -- there's hardly a visible demographic in between.

Okay, fine, so it's not exactly easy to be a guy in Singapore. Women expect a lot of you these days ... having your own place, preferably with a car and a couple of credit cards thrown in.

I'm a little hesitant to bring up the 5Cs (condo, career, credit card, car, country club) because I feel like they're slightly outdated. These days, depending on the circles you travel in, there's a lot of cultural capital and fashion savvy required, too.

Not to mention it's tough trying to get the whole "true romance" mindset going here when people look to government agencies for dating initiatives.

Even after all my bitching, it's not actually hard for a guy to be a "man" in Singapore by current standards; if you're a girl who likes being in a committed relationship with someone safe, ready, willing and able to play house with you.

These are generally the sort of people who carry their girlfriends' purses and wear matchy-matchy clothes with their partner. But these aren't the droids I'm looking for, are you?

The sad fact is that many guys here still can't come to terms with gender equality. From experience, the hyper-masculine set still don't take a woman's view seriously. And for the submissive man-wife, the message here is: grow a pair. Don't wait for someone to grow them for you.

Ying and Yang.

This article is so text book, the more accurate reports or say, much accurate research would b to survey on overseas women. This are the few groups, first would be overseas spouse, the biggest group, i think it remains as MY ladies. PRC till now, not a force to reckon with.

Girls which came here for study, next those who came seek employment, never ask sex workers. They are looking at Johns so not accurate, i would b suprised they found local men charming, different fr their homeboys who are so political minded. Over seas, if GF want her boy to help with handbag, probably he will loud at her face.

I wonder does ang mo countries assist their handicap? There is a local handicap man who claimed London is more facilities friendly, compare to here, but i watched OKTO being humans. It give me the impression ang mos treat handicap people like super beings.

Ang mo countries can spend tons of $ in making say, wider the roads for wheelchairs then, i don't see why should they assist the person in a wheelchair. He she should b able to take care, being free from normal people help. So? Is that what this local guy in wheelchair really want?

Different systems, wind and water u decide which u want. London or here?

She probably forgot a big point about this issue - herself, personally i don't find singaporean women a turn on at all, yes i'm a true blue singaporean male but i'm just not attracted to local girls, sad to say, yeah you may be a pretty face but i feel not many women in singapore exude style, i've seen a few but not many and i really mean not many. If i'm not attracted to say the least, i wouldn't even bother making the conversation interesting or say, flirt with her. but that's just being me, my sole opinion anyway.

Interesting read, and she has some good points, until she said "Personally, I blame the men", and then her credibility and point about equality went out the window.

If she's serious about equality, then she should also examine herself and other women and see if they share equal blame ( the fact is that they do share the blame : it takes 2 hands to clap ).

Many girls in Singapore prefer to be pampered and chauffeured around, and whose range of conversations is limited to shopping, food, cooking, and fashion. Rarely would you find an independent, knowledgeable girl who can hold a proper conversation. Often enough, you just need to bring up a major current affairs topic ( eg, the situation in the middle east, or earthquake in NZ ), and you'll get a bank stare from a pair of womanly eyes. Why just blame men when Sg women are equally hopeless ?

As a side note, I do agree that most Singaporean men ( and women ) are hopeless conversationalists. Guys tend to talk about property, work, football, and other really boring stuff. Girls talk about fashion, family, kids, maids, shopping, and other really boring stuff too. It's hard to find a Singaporean, guy or girl, who can hold a conversation about current affairs, general knowledge, politics, etc.

But she's right about Singaporean men being pushovers. That's why they get bullied by their wives, foreign talent colleagues and even FLs.

The so-called friends she's been mixing with that give her such an impression must be a bunch of SPGs.

Or mommy's pets.

Ms Ong, you need to widen your circle of friends. The people you've been mixing with, the stuff you've been reading, perhaps that pair of glasses you've been wearing all these years, are seriously affecting your vision which I believe is ultimately going to be detrimental to your psychological health.

The signs are unfortunately showing.

We here have all grown a pair. Wanna see?

Men are from Mars, and women are from Venus or sometin like that. Differences between the two sexes are inherent but we get together for mutual benefits all thru the generations. Just becos some local women can't see thru the idiosyncrasies and peculiar habits of local guys, it does not mean they are right.

I notice there are more guy bashing articles nowadays, if not wrong, all written by females. Only article that comes close to pro guys was the call to consider polygamy by Andy Ho, but then again, he was suggesting it as a way to increase birthrate.
If any guy writes anything bad about the females, he is labelled MCP, neantherdal, backwards whatever. Looks like there is no winning or compromise with them.

Love them or hate them, but still can't do without them :(:D:o:p

One point that caught my attention is "a very singaporean aversion to healthy conflict", coincidentally this particular subject matter has been on my mind recently, due to my recent interest in the dynamics of couple relationship.

In one of the chapters of a book I was reading, it talks about arguments, a part and parcel of all healthy relationships. I realised I really do not have much exposure on how to resolve an argument properly. At home when my parents quarrel, tendency is for a whole lot of shouting but no proper compromise. Most of the time my dad practises conflict avoidance just to keep the peace. I know now that is only a temporary solution and one that in time will only make matters worse because trouble is bubbling below the surface waiting to explode.

I used to think no conflict is the best, I was wrong. No two persons are exactly alike and because of these minute differences, there will be conflicts. So don't be afraid to thrash things out (if u need an incentive just think "make up sex").

Lastly, I highly recommend reading a book on relationships, while there are things which I already knew, there are also explanations on why they are happening and how to deal with them. Relationships are highly complex and every bit of knowledge helps.

Cheers guys, its high time we show the local women we have an opinion and a voice. Stand up for Singapore !

Well, you cannot really blame poor arts programs. Topics for conversations are in the newspapers, magazines, and of course the Internet. There's BBC news, CNN, Wikipedia, etc. Unlimited source of information that can be turned into conversation.

I can talk to anyone about politics, technology, science, current affairs, earthquakes, astronomy, travel, food, wines, finance, etc. The relevant background information is freely available ! All you need is just a working knowledge of these topics, which you can easily get just by reading widely beyond your school books or professional books. You don't have to know them in great detail.

The sad fact is that many guys here still can't come to terms with gender equality. From experience, the hyper-masculine set still don't take a woman's view seriously. And for the submissive man-wife, the message here is: grow a pair. Don't wait for someone to grow them for you.

In short she is looking for the PERFECT MAN ? Someone that is well toned, full of musculinity, able to carry a meaningful conversation with her, pamper her and also screw her upside down if she so much dares to ask the guy to carry a handbag ?

good luck to her.

I deduce that it may be due to frustration that this article is written. I do agree with bro peanut123 that she has written some valid truths. The main argument points are conversions, relationships & gender equality arranged in a disarray of thoughts. From the way it is written, it could be more of her lamenting away about her dire situation.

I fully agree this point. We (Ladies & Gentleman) can never hold a proper conversion without common grounds. This hold true even between the same sexes. It would be a shouting match if one talks about stars and the other talks about the moon. I have met only a handful of ladies that can indulge well into knowledgeable affairs and issues and one of them became my FB. Both sexes need to understand that to make a conversion tick, either one party has to dabble into the other side. For Ms Ong, I can only concur that to find one person that could tick her conversation would be either a female or a feminine minded guy whom could relate well to her about fashion, music and current gossips. No offences to gays here as 80% of my gay friends could fit the bill.

On the point of relationships, I deduced that Ms Ong is being victimized and force to rebel only in blogging as she is either subjected to the mercy of financial dependency on the family or she have not had the chance to meet other Singapore families. This made me think, could her family be so traditional that she didn't get the chance to encounter a man both intellectual and intimately? Her points on relationship is to be voided as what I understand from the end of it is that she has never experienced being in a relationship hence all the talks of survey is a cover-up to blind readers of her disappointment in not being able to discover and enjoy a boy-girl relationship.

On point of gender equality, there can never be equals. It is a fact and many refuse to accept it. Be it physically, mentally or emotionally there exists differences we have to accept and instead of bickering with one another, why can't we compliment each other? Please do note that gender equality does not mean that guys are meant for dominant job while gals are meant for sidekick. In reality, one have to work 2x harder to prove your worthiness and capabilities regardless male or female. In reality, Ms Ong cannot expect gender equality is a given right. In reality Men cannot refuse due credits to ladies for a job well done.

Ms Ong is a victim as much as i see it. Our SBF is filled with bros who can converse with you intellectually, who can bring you to a new level of relationship and who are willingly to show you realities about gender equality.

Ms Ong, FUCK YOU UNDERSTAND, YOU CB, YOU KNNBLCBPCBCCB. Pardon me for a relapse of my epileptic for shallow mind.

I do agree that most of sg males avoid conflicts, even for me. simply i would think it's just a waste of time to quarrel to someone who deems that you have already done wrong.
The thing about sg in general, i would say have a very singular focus on things they have to taught or told. Probably due to our educational and social aspect of the society here in sg.
this singular focus of thing makes conversation very hard to go unless 2 have alot in common to click together.

like that essay written, she already has the mindset that all sg males are boring conversationalists.
even you have more knowledge than any other angmo around in sg, she also would have choose to talk to the angmo than talk to you first.

we should be asking the women!

where are all the good women who can contribute to Singapore like the guys do?

Where are all the good women to give the Sg men the loving instaed of the bitching about Sg men being softies and not being good enuff?

Of course, there are also good women and men in SG, why should we guys be on the defensive and always get hits from SPGs and materialictic SG women.

Y are there getting more and more articles and cases of sporean girls lashing out at sporean guys and guys hitting back at girls for all the wrong reasons? We are humans, we have different characters and lifestyles that we are used to.

Y can't we, instead of pointing out the bad points, learn to appreciate what each gender from our fellow sporeans do to have contributed towards our country and for our fellow everyone? For eg, guys goes through NS to learn to defend our country, while the girls are more and more educated and helping to grow the economy in the workforce on top of the fact that they have to suffer 9mths of preganancy after we guys enjoy loving them for 5mins. Think through, aren't we fortunate enough compared to most other asian countries? And here we are, have nothing better to do exceot to throw missiles at each other.

Take a step back and make this world a better place to live in. We are really fortunate to be here. And take the pride away. It doesn't matter if you have an ang mo partner and you think they are better or spouse from some 3rd world country, just be happy. Dun have to feel proud or inferior, or try to think you are above or below anyone.

Leave the whiners behind. They are just a bunch of immature adults who are still stuck behind their time. And for once, expatriates here are not that great. Most of them are here simply because they are not good enough back in their country. So dun use it to compare with us sporeans be it guys or girls. Spore is getting more popular worldwide, and they are here to earn a living like anyone of us here. Only difference is their skin colour and that does not equate to foolishly thinking that they are more, or even an iota, superior over us. Period.

My friend u r correct but, u forgot media is allways searching for talks. It is repeat materials, we see it often on tvs. Suddenly the authority here wanted to organized events for local ladies, is not liked they have no ideas where to play or something.

Ladies are also a group to target during voting, don't u think so? Of course it is, no bones about it. Btw, saw an article on Catherine Lim, don't think i need to write who is she.

I also saw her pic, well maintain at 68 yrs old, as MILF as any Media corp actress. I grew up with few of her literatures, Catherine Lim writes well somehow, i don't love her ending. Still her heroine in the 60s, reflects the culture the women status of that era. Her latest novel she wrote what she know best.

Perhaps Miss Catherine Lim would break her traditional, tell a story of local men. I am curious what she thinks of us, maybe a rich man son who wasted his $ on a call girl? The local version, we seen many HKG movies allreally.
